SUMMARY:JPI Urban Europe at WUF9: Networking Event
DESCRIPTION:Networking Event: The value of City-City Partnerships for Implementing the New Urban Agenda \nThis event is from 9:00am to 11:00am on 11 February 2018. (Local time) \nOrganised by JPI Urban Europe and URBAN-EU-CHINA \nFor implementing the New Urban Agenda\, partnerships with strong commitments and cooperation on all scales\, from local to global are required. Bi-lateral and multilateral partnerships between cities can enhance international support for effective and targeted capacity-building to support national plans to implement the NUA and SDGs. Exchange and co-creation of knowledge\, technologies and experiences regarding sustainable city services and infrastructures offers promising prospects for addressing issues of urban planning\, environment\, health\, water\, transport\, ICT\, hazards\, resilience and disaster risk reduction\, and improving the well-being of citizens. \nWith city-city partnership we understand the “triple helix” of university\, industry and local government relations. This model has become very popular for cooperative innovation in the last two decades. The helix is used as an image to illustrate a complex network of relationships\, facilitating dynamic co-creation and respecting links\, flows and backflows between partners. More recently\, the term “quadruple helix” has been used\, in which the fourth helix is represented as civil society becoming involved in the innovation process. \nAim\nThe main aim of this session is to assess the framework conditions for dedicated\, committed and successful triple/quadruple helix city-city partnerships for implementing the NUA. The discussions will be framed by presentations of examples for city-city partnerships aiming at exchanging knowledge\, mutual learning and capacity building of projects funded by JPI Urban Europe and the experience of URBAN-EU-CHINA’s partners. Besides presentations the following questions will be addressed with active participation of the audience: \n• How can global partnerships contribute to the mobilisation towards\na common vision on sustainable urban development? \n• How can global triple/quadruple helix city partnerships foster\ncapacity building/knowledge creation for implementing the NUA? \n• What framework conditions are required to allow global\npartnerships among cities to be successful? \nSpeakers\nSigrun Kabisch\, UFZ Leipzig\, Germany\, JPI Urban Europe Scientific Advisory Board\nBernhard Müller\, IOER\, Dresden\nCAO Buyang\, Tongji University\, Shanghai\nGabriela Viale Pereira\, Danube University Krems; JPI Urban Europe Project SmartGov\nWU Changhua\, President of China Redesign Hub and Vice Chair of World Green Design Organisation\nKristian Mjøen\, Trondheim Municipality\, Norway \nContact\nJohannes Riegler\njohannes.riegler@ffg.at \n

SUMMARY:EUROCITIES 2017 Ljubljana - circular cities
DESCRIPTION:EUROCITIES 2017 Ljubljana will take place on 15-17 November and will focus on ‘circular economy’. \nOur current levels of consumption exceed what our natural resource systems can produce\, and we throw away more than we reuse or recycle\, with tangible consequences for our environment and climate. Cities are responsible for implementing national and EU recycling targets and can play a crucial role in stimulating behavioural change relating to consumption patterns. As procurers of goods and services we can guide decisions towards more circular choices\, and build local partnerships with businesses moving towards circular production models. How can we strive to become circular cities and support the UN sustainable development goal of ‘ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns’? \nLjubljana has achieved impressive results over the past 10 years through the implementation of a comprehensive zero waste strategy\, which has proven a powerful driver for societal change. The city’s success is based on: strong political commitment and leadership; sound management; investment in ambitious infrastructure; collaboration with citizens; and an active communications strategy promoting reduction\, reuse and responsible consumption to all citizens. \nFor more information visit www.eurocities2017.eu

SUMMARY:3rd GPC Workshop on the future of Joint Programming
DESCRIPTION:How to improve coherence of the partnership landscape and strengthen the delivery of partnerships on mission oriented programmes? \nThe landscape of partnerships and networks dealing with research and innovation issues to tackle societal challenges has diversified over the last years. Since each of these challenges represents wicked issues they can only be addressed in partnership of research\, policy\, business and society\, involving actors on local\, regional\, national and international level in variable geometries. Different partnership formats have therefore emerged facilitating cooperation of national\, European and international actors. Nearly all of these partnerships have specified their missions\, developed longer-term strategies and set-up portfolios of joint actions. \nThe workshop aims to take a next step towards a reflection of existing partnerships and their missions against requirements of future mission oriented programmes and a more coherent landscape of such partnerships. Parallel sessions will allow thematic in-depth discussions on how to improve the coherence between partnerships and potentially rationalise the current landscape. Participants will discuss how to improve delivery of partnerships in tackling specific societal challenges and related missions. \nA parallel session on sustainable cities is supported by JPI Urban Europe and JPI Cultural Heritage. \nMore information and draft programme

SUMMARY:Conference: Cities set Standards to be Smarter and more Sustainable
DESCRIPTION:How to replicate smart city solutions? Are standards the right tools for cities? Can the European Standardization Organizations be part of the cities’ journey towards a smart and sustainable future? \nWHY?\nCities are not always fully aware of what standards can offer\, as they may not be familiar with the value voluntary standards bring and how to get involved in the standardization system. This conference will bring cities and standardizers together to debate on priorities and needs for cities in their journey to become smarter and more sustainable. \nTherefore this event aims to:\n•raise awareness and promote standardization among cities and citizens;\n•showcase and exchange cities’ best practices where standards play an important role;\n•find out how to replicate smart cities solutions;\n•collect expression of needs for further standardization development;\n•motivate decision-makers and investors. \nThe results of the debates will feed into the CEN-CENELEC-ETSI Sector Forum on ‘Smart and Sustainable Cities and Communities’ acting as advisory and coordinating body for European standardization activities in this field. \nWHAT?\nIn the realm of the 2017 World Standards Day theme ‘Standards make cities smarter’\, the European Standardization Organizations organize an intensive one-day event with keynotes\, case studies and panel discussions. The purpose is to explore the needs of and provide solutions for smart cities in their roll out of suitable infrastructures\, services\, systems\, devices\, equipment and much more. \nParticipants will be able to network and be inspired by solutions that address the challenges of making cities smart and more sustainable\, learn from existing projects about how standards already contribute to this goal in Europe\, and discover how standards can help in scaling up and replicating smart and sustainable cities’ solutions. \nFOR WHOM?\n•Representatives of local communities\n•city authorities\n•city professionals\n•representatives of smart cities projects\n•associations of cities\n•policy makers and regulators\n•regions\n•investors and governments\n•standardizers\n•societal stakeholders\n•other interested parties \nMore information and registration
