SUMMARY:Accelerating urban transition: Tapping the full potential of Smart City and Community pilots - A Smart City EXPO side event
DESCRIPTION:The event is co-organised by JPI Urban Europe\, the ERA-NET Smart Cities and Communities and the Austrian Ministry for Transport\, Innovation and Technology. \nAim of the Workshop\nThis workshop aims at bringing together people working in public administration\, researchers\, business\, NGOs and civil society to jointly discuss measures to fully exploit the potential of Smart City and Communities pilot and demonstration projects. The aim is to identify bottlenecks at hand\, ways forward and concepts to move from demonstration and pilots to larger scale implementation. Experiences from cities and JPI Urban Europe research projects will be shared and used to reflect on good practice examples and critical conditions. \nWorkshop Outline\nAs urban systems by definition are complex and highly depending on local characteristics\, upscaling and replication of Smart City and Communities demonstration projects and living labs is a tricky but central issue. On the one hand\, the settings and circumstances in piloting projects are speci-fically arranged for the course of demonstration which might not necessarily fully reflect the urban realities. On the other hand\, plans and activities might be dedicated to the circumstances in one particular city\, district or neighbourhood making the direct application in another setting difficult.\nTwo aspects that all such Smart City implementation efforts have in common is that they have to rely on INTEGRATED and JOINT efforts. Integrated\, cross-sectoral efforts are needed to benefit from Smart City concepts. Various borders\, originating from the so-called technical and administrative “silos”\, have to be overcome to create a common understanding and platform for Smart City implementation. In addition\, JOINT efforts are required to tap upon the available local knowledge from all kind of different stakeholders affected by the projects and to co-create a common urban future. JOINT efforts also increase the democratic legitimacy of Smart City and Community endeavours. In this light – with a huge number of Smart City pilot projects ongoing across Europe – one of the most pressing questions is how to come to larger scale implementation of Smart City strategies and exploitation of the pilot project results under these conditions. \nDRAFT AGENDA\nREGISTRATION \n

This programme is tailor made for recently started SURF-researchers (PhD students\, Postdocs\, researchers) in both the 5 national projects and the 13 international projects (ENSCC-call JPI Urban Europe).\n Join the programme to improve your knowledge\, sharpen your skills and become a wellinformed member of the SURF community. It is characterized by alternating lectures and assignments\, many interaction moments between students and lecturers\, feedback on individual research projects\, and workshops. \nFirst week (10-13 October 2016)\nOn Monday we start with an introduction and a workshop on valorization. You will learn how to do a short pitch about (the societal value of) your project. On Tuesday transport systems and transport innovations are the central issue. On Wednesday we focus on cities and urban systems\, including innovations. We will also visit AMS (the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions). Thursday morning is about transitions in the urban domain; in the afternoon governance is the central theme. \nSecond week (6 -9 March 2017)\nOn Monday we reflect on the first week and responsible innovation (ethical and societal aspects of technology) will be discussed. On Tuesday ‘society’ is central again with a part on Cost Benefit Analysis and a part on the role of citizens and self-organisation. Wednesday is all about cooperation with non-academic partners and knowledge co-creation. Thursday is about knowledge valorization and dissemination. \nPDF with more information

SUMMARY:Government and Housing in a Time of Crisis: Policy\, Planning\, Design and Delivery
DESCRIPTION:In the political economies of the West the provision of social and affordable housing has been subject to major change in recent decades. Nowhere is this more evident than in local and regional government. Today\, local authority architects are mostly a thing of the past; house construction by regional administrators is increasingly rare; and local government management of housing is in decline. In place of these models are a plethora of policies\, approaches and players. In the UK context these include ALMOs\, stock transfers\, Section 106 Agreements\, right-to-buy\, and the growth of Housing Associations etc. In other parts of Europe and across the developed world\, the names of such initiatives and groups differ\, but the issues in play remain the same.\nMore information

SUMMARY:European Cities in Dynamic Competition – Urban Governance\, Cooperation\, Competitiveness and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Today\, more than two thirds of citizens of Europe are city dwellers\, and the tendency is increasing. The quality of urban life and technical infrastructure are considered to be crucial to attracting and retaining a skilled labor force and businesses. The social and economic concentration of resources in cities may\, however\, result in negative side-effects like pollution or congestion. Hence cities are both the source of and solution to economic\, environmental and social challenges. Cities in an aging Europe will also need to assert themselves amid increasing digitization and global competition. Managing urban complexity to create sustainable cities will thus be one of the most challenging tasks for European cities in the 21st century.\nMore information
