SUMMARY:Innovate4Cities 2021 Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Innovate4Cities Conference will be an international gathering at the nexus of cities\, climate change science and innovation. This groundbreaking meeting will be co-hosted by UN-Habitat and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM). It will bring together over 1\,000 city leaders\, scientists\, researchers\, innovators\, academics\, youth and business people to advance pragmatic and action oriented research and science that will help cities reduce their carbon footprint and increase resilience to climate change. \nThe conference program is built around the core themes of the Global Research and Action Agenda on Cities and Climate Change Science (GRAA) developed in Edmonton in 2018. There have been many developments in the urban sustainability agenda since Edmonton\, in particular COVID-19 has transformed cities\, widening existing inequalities\, plunged new actors into financial hardship and exposed new vulnerabilities. When we rebuild cities in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic we must ensure that the green recovery is inclusive and provides co-benefits\, such as improving health outcomes\, promoting economic development\, delivering jobs and addressing gender and racial inequities. In light of these developments\, Justice & Equity\, Health & Wellbeing and Digitalisation/Smart Cities have been added as cross-cutting themes for the conference and will be actively considered in the GRAA review process that will take place before\, during and after the conference. \n \nTopical Themes:\nBuilt and Blue/Green Infrastructure:\nInfrastructure is essential for providing critical urban services and building resilience against climate change. However\, it is paramount that growth in infrastructure\, particularly in the global South\, does not result in a carbon lock-in as this will ultimately hinder cities’ ability to mitigate emissions. Innovation in low-carbon infrastructure options and nature-based solutions are thus central to the sustainable development agenda\, particularly given the range of co-benefits provided in relation to health\, well-being\, biodiversity\, and enhanced urban amenity. \nTopic ideas: low-carbon construction techniques\, affordable low-carbon building materials\, carbon storage in infrastructure\, clean transport\, energy transitions\, bioclimatic designed infrastructure\, nature-based solutions. \nSustainable Consumption & Production:\nIn terms of unsustainable resource consumption\, cities are at the heart of the problem\, consuming 75% of the world’s resources and producing 50% of global waste (Ellen MacArthur Foundation). However\, cities as centres of economic\, social and cultural exchange\, are well-positioned to tackle these problems. Innovation is needed in this domain in order to accelerate cleaner production\, improve the circularity of material flows and encourage the diffusion of low-carbon materially sufficient lifestyles. \nTopic ideas: Circular economy\, urban metabolism\, Waste management and closed loop food systems\, Industrial symbiosis\, Sustainable and resilient logistic systems\, Sharing economy\, Sustainable lifestyle. \nSign up for the conference here.

SUMMARY:#EURegionsWeek session: Urban integrated approaches - between the green and digital transitions and the New European Bauhaus
DESCRIPTION:JPI Urban Europe\, together with the European Commission\, will host a participatory lab at the 19th European Week of Regions and Cities 11- 14 October. The session takes place on 13 October\, 11.30am – 1.00pm CEST and explores how national and EU programming support can step up the game towards 2030.\n \nBoth the Green Deal and Horizon Europe focus on fair\, green and digital transitions for the EU to shape sustainable and liveable futures. Complementing this\, the New European Bauhaus highlights the role of design and culture. \nFrom the urban dimension perspective\, the green and digital transitions are inextricably linked with questions of liveability\, urban design governance\, urban robustness and regeneration\, placemaking\, (bio)diversity\, democracy\, consumption\, climate change\, etc. If these ambitions are to succeed\, integrated approaches to accommodate a broad diversity of actors and practices are required. Not least when fostering evidence-based policymaking and co-creative experimental approaches. \nTo develop capacity-building for those implementing EU cohesion policy\, and in light of the proposed European Partnership Driving Urban Transitions to a Sustainable Future (DUT) and the European Urban Initiative (EUI)\, what is being done at these crossroads today? How are city authorities tackling these challenges? How can national and EU programming support step up the game towards 2030? \n> Read more and register

Chaired by Maria Sangiuliano (SmartVenice)\, the Citizen Focus Action Cluster strongly believes in citizens as fundamental actors for the regeneration and development of intelligent communities. In the context of smarter cities\, citizens can help local governments prioritise and respond by consistently offering inclusive ‘smart’ solutions attentive to contrast inequalities and existing divides. Join us to hear more about policy updates from the European Commission\, a new Democratic Innovations Initiative\, the initiative Citizen’s Control of Personal Data\, and  a new sustainable foundation with 19 associated cities planning to fund a digital platform with an embedded Central Purchasing Body to support joint procurement processes. \nRegister here to be part of the meeting. And here you can find the preliminary agenda of the meeting here. \nAction Cluster meeting Integrated Infrastructures and Processes\n18 November 2021 I 09:30 to 12:30 CET \nSharing data across city services and stakeholders\, and multi-purposing city assets\, to achieve desired outcomes\, is highly contemporary\, absolutely essential\, and frustratingly challenging. \nMany city infrastructures are ageing; budgets to replace them are stretched; they are procured and managed in ‘silos’. Yet the potential for cities and their customers through new joined-up approaches to exploit modern technologies is substantial. \nRegister here to be part of the meeting.

SUMMARY:STRENGTHENING URBAN POLICY IN THE EU: Integrating the Principles of the New Leipzig Charter into the Urban Agenda for the EU
DESCRIPTION:The New Leipzig Charter is the key reference document on principles of good urban governance in Europe. It is interlinked with the Urban Agenda for the EU as a novel multi-level governance approach that aims to strengthen the “urban dimension” of EU policies. With the first generation of partnerships of the Urban Agenda for the EU coming to an end\, the process of paving the way for an even stronger Urban Agenda has been initiated and advanced under the Trio Presidency of Germany\, Portugal and Slovenia. This process will conclude with the adoption of the Ljubljana Agreement at the Informal Ministerial on Urban Development on 26 November 2021. \nHow can the continuation of the Urban Agenda for the EU contribute to the implementation of the principles of the New Leipzig Charter\, and vice versa? How can we bring an urban dimension into EU-policies\, such as the “Green Deal”? \nThe event is aimed at the stakeholders of the European “urban development community” with a strong interest in the EU “urban dimension”. The session will conclude the comprehensive series of seven public web conferences “Cities Fit for Future” on the implementation of the New Leipzig Charter\, which started in September 2020. It is organised by the German Association for Housing\, Urban and Spatial Development and funded by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior\, Building and Community in the context of the National Urban Development Policy. \n18. SUMMARY:AGORA Strategic Dialogue: Identifying the crossroads between urban circularity\, mobility and energy
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED. If you have any questions please contact johannes.riegler@jpi-urbaneurope.eu\n  \n16 February 2022 – 16.00-18.00 CET\n17 February 2022  – 10.00-16.00 CET \nOnline via Zoom\nVirtual host city: Athens\, Greece\nClick here for the PDF invitation\n \nIn mid-2022\, JPI Urban Europe’s Driving Urban Transitions programme (DUT) will be launched which focuses on three urban transition pathways: (1) Circular urban economies for regenerative urbanism\, (2) 15-minute cities: driving mobility transitions through the neighbourhood level\, and (3) Urban energy transition through positive energy districts. While each transition pathway follows a mission to make urban areas more climate-neutral\, liveable and sustainable\, identifying the interrelationships\, connections\, contradictions and synergies between them is essential to support urban transitions in an integrated manner. \nThe AGORA Strategic Dialogue: “Identifying the crossroads between urban circularity\, mobility and energy” aims at identifying priorities\, issues and concerns which link in between the three thematic priorities. The results of the workshop will help to set the priorities of the first phase of the Driving Urban Transitions programme by identifying the most critical and urgent challenges and issues and how to approach them. Join the AGORA Dialogue and co-develop the Driving Urban Transitions nexus. \nWhat you can expect from your participation in the AGORA Dialogue: \n\nContribute to Driving Urban Transition’s priority setting: The results of the workshop will be used for identifying priority issues for DUT’s implementation measures for the next 1-2 years.\nExchange\, discussions\, co-creation: You will have the possibility to join about 50 change makers\, urban practitioners\, researchers and others in discussions on what is needed to drive urban transitions.\nInteractive formats: You will engage in interactive exercises in virtual breakout rooms to jointly reflect on how to bring research and innovation into local action and support capacity building for urban transformation.\nNetworking: You will be able to connect to the AGORA community\, the informal stakeholder network maintained by JPI Urban Europe.\n\nWhat is the AGORA? \nTHIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED. SUMMARY:AGORA Thematic Dialogue: Building transformation capacities for collective urban futures
DESCRIPTION:Online via Zoom\nWhile there are numerous strategies\, agendas\, calls and activities in science\, policy \, and practice on various levels aiming at building urban transformation capacities\, it remains unclear “what kind of capacity can actually deliver change towards sustainability that is transformative” (Wolfram et al. 2019). The AGORA Dialogue “Building transformation capacities for collective urban futures” will spark a discussion and exchange on critical factors for delivering transformative urban change.\nJPI Urban Europe recently funded 16 projects which aim at building urban transformation capacities. The projects bring together a total of 214 local public administrations\, SMEs\, research and innovation organisations\, civil society partners and other urban actors to enable capacity building for urban transformations. Each project addresses specific topics and issues as well as communities: from age-friendly cities\, to the role of libraries and schools\, artificial intelligence and augmented reality in transformation processes\, societal polarisation and inequalities\, strengthening resilience through inclusive processes and much more. \nThe AGORA Dialogue will build upon these projects and facilitate a dialogue between these project and interested urban actors and change makers from research and innovation\, local public administration\, urban doers communities\, SMEs\, businesses\, civil society associations and others to exchange on how urban transformative capacities can nurture change towards sustainable and liveable urban futures. EN-UTC project partners are especially encouraged to join the AGORA Dialogue to exchange on how their projects will support urban change. \nThe AGORA Thematic Dialogue aims at grasping the complexity of approaches to drive urban transitions. Concretely\, the workshop aims at: \n\nconnecting EN-UTC funded projects with the AGORA community\, JPI Urban Europe’s community of urban change makers;\nIdentifying factors for delivering transformative change;\nExchange on how individual projects can shape societal discourses and collective urban futures.\n\n
