SUMMARY:JPI Urban Europe projects meeting
DESCRIPTION:JPI Urban Europe invites all funded projects and other key actors in the JPI Urban Europe community to the third Projects Meeting in Brussels on the 31th of May 2017. \nThe meeting provides an opportunity for the project partners to meet and to share knowledge\, present results\, engage in strategic discussions and to find partners for future cooperation. For the projects funded in the ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures the Projects Meeting is the official kick-off. \nTime and place: 31st of May 2017\, 09.00 – 17.00\, in Brussels\, La Tricoterie\, Rue Théodore Verhaegen 158\nRegistration for the Projects Meeting below \nJPI Urban Europe continuously expands its portfolio of research projects. To bring most value from this\, the programme management aims to strengthen the urban research and innovation community\, building upon projects results\, identifying barriers for inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation and needs for new approaches in funding and programming and providing a platform to exchange views\, network and match-make for future calls or activities. Annual projects meetings are important forums for this. \nPresent project results\nAt the meeting representatives from JPI Urban Europe management board will share information about the latest developments in terms of programme management and prioritiesfor future calls and activities. All projects funded in the ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures are invited to present their projects in a cavalcade of short pitches. Three projects from pilot call I and II and ERA-NET Cofund Smart Cities and Communities that are near to completion will be invited to present their results at the meeting. Please contact katarina.schylberg@iqs.se if you wish to make a presentation. \nShare skills and engage in in-depth discussions in workshops \nProjects are invited to share skills and learn from each other in specific areas related to communication of results\, influencing policy\, approaching potential project partners\, setting up urban living labs and keeping stakeholders involved over time. Participants will have the opportunity to share insight and give feedback on each other’s projects in a poster session and to engage in content related in-depth discussions\, to explore the links in ongoing projects and future cooperation in breakout sessions. \nWelcome to register two partners from each project! \nWe ask you to register one researcher and one project partner representing a non-academic organization\, i.e. city\, business\, civil society etc. to participate and represent your project. DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS YOUR CITY’S TRICKIEST CHALLENGE?\nImagine you have Europe’s smartest heads working hard to solve your city’s problems. This can be the case if you join us in Brussels May 30. \nJPI Urban Europe hereby invites city representatives to come forth and tell us\, researchers and industrial actors what their biggest challenges are. We need to know\, so we can tailor our upcoming innovation call to your needs.\nResearch and innovation funding usually has a thematic approach. It can be energy\, transport\, climate changes\, health or various combinations of themes. The call Making Cities Work is no exception. But the theme is very broad: How to develop the future’s sustainable and livable cities? We want cities themselves to co-create the call with us\, to make sure it addresses the right challenges.\nThe topics that emerge from this brokerage event will be taken up in the call for Making Cities Work. This call will open in fall 2017 and will close in spring 2018. After evaluation\, the selected projects could start in summer 2018. SUMMARY:European Transport Innovation Challenge 2017 - deadline for applictions is 2 May
DESCRIPTION:This transport innovation Challenge will reward transport innovators for their ideas for a cleaner and more efficient future in transport. \nThe EU is committed to cutting CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030 and by 80% by 2050. With transportation accounting for one quarter of CO2 emissions\, there is a need to radically transform the way people and goods are transported. This Challenge will help move the EU along the path of decarbonisation and sustainable growth. \nThe 12 winners of the Challenge will get a free trip to Strasbourg (France) on 19\, 20 and 21 June 2017 to follow the ITS Congress\, Europe’s biggest gathering of professionals working in intelligent transport systems. DESCRIPTION:About this course: People have become more critical of European policy and often seem to prefer local policy solutions in response to globalisation problems. How do you experience EU policy? Does it help? And if not\, how can we change this? In this course\, we learn how EU policy is made\, and how policy is transferred to member states and implemented by various authorities\, including regional and local governments. We discuss the challenges of the European multi-level governance structure. We also focus on the main causes of policy failure or success. On this journey\, we focus on actual policy and present the views of various experts: how easy is it to establish yourself in another EU-country? How do governments make sure that the air you breathe is clean? And who is responsible? \nYou will be able to do research together in your own local setting. Research on implementation in which you can make comparisons between different countries or areas. If you live outside the EU\, this is not a problem. DESCRIPTION:OIS 2017 will explore the key enabling factors of cities’ capacity to innovate\, prosper and share the benefits of growth with all. OIS 2017 will bring together leaders from governments\, cities\, corporates and civil society organisations to share successful practices\, models and ideas\, in the spirit of mutual learning and exchange. Turin will host the main event on 5-7 April\, as a European middle-size city that has proven able to develop and implement a post-industrial strategy in order to remain competitive on the international stage and share with the whole community the benefits that come from that. An International call for Solutions for Civic and Smart City technologies has been launched and the winners will be showcased in the Tech Demonstrator of the Open Innovation Center of the City of Turin\, Open Incet\, where the main event will take place. \nMore information

DESCRIPTION:The Association has launched a new policy research initiative worth £15\,000 (C. €17\,000\, US$18\,000) to successful teams aiming to connect their work and wider communities to societal questions and policy needs. \nThis new initiative is called an “Expo” taking the word’s meaning of a “comprehensive description and explanation of an idea or theory”. \nThe Association seeks a leading and impactful role for its community\, to inform and influence policy and practice in creative and ambitious ways.The aim is to support Expos addressing issues that are important\, current and having an impact on society. These Expos will investigate how the communities of regional studies\, regional science\, urban studies and related fields can respond to new societal challenges and opportunities. \nIn 2017\, the RSA provides funding for up to three Expos on topics related to the priority areas set out in the RSA Development Plan 2015 – 2020. \nApplications are invited on the following themes:\n◾Industrial Strategy and the Role of Industry\, Employment & Apprenticeships in Cities and Regions\n◾Climate change\, adaptation and governance\n◾Global Migration and regional development \nThe two key deliverables from each Expo are:\n◾an article for Regional Studies\, Regional Science with the Article Processing Charge (APC) sponsored by the Association from the withheld portion of the grant (articles will be subject to peer review)\n◾a book in the new RSA Impact and Policy Series. This would be a minimum 25\,000 and maximum 30\,000 words policy book. It could be in the form of a report or edited papers with an introduction and conclusion. It is characterized by alternating lectures and assignments\, many interaction moments between students and lecturers\, feedback on individual research projects\, and workshops. \nFirst week (10-13 October 2016)\nOn Monday we start with an introduction and a workshop on valorization. You will learn how to do a short pitch about (the societal value of) your project. On Tuesday transport systems and transport innovations are the central issue. On Wednesday we focus on cities and urban systems\, including innovations. We will also visit AMS (the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions). Thursday morning is about transitions in the urban domain; in the afternoon governance is the central theme. \nSecond week (6 -9 March 2017)\nOn Monday we reflect on the first week and responsible innovation (ethical and societal aspects of technology) will be discussed. On Tuesday ‘society’ is central again with a part on Cost Benefit Analysis and a part on the role of citizens and self-organisation. DESCRIPTION:JPI Urban Europe in collaboration with CEMR and URBIS are promoting an Exploitation Workshop – Smart City Governance: building new solutions\, exploiting the potentials – to be hosted by the CEMR Conference Centre\, Brussels on Thursday 2 March 2017. \nThe workshop will engage with a diversity of expertise in structured dialogue exploring new opportunities for maximising the exploitation potentials of smart city governance solutions. The workshop aim is to explore these potentials to enhance project exploitation\, considering market opportunity\, the development of new business models\, as well as longer-term dynamics and sustainability. \nThe event will be animated by expert contributions from PwC\, URBIS\, the European Commission\, European Environment Agency\, European Innovation Partnership Smart Cities and Communities (EIP SCC)\, European city networks\, and a multiplicity of JPI Urban Europe project partners. The cooperation was established in order to bring together the fragmented research and expertise across the globe to find innovative new solutions to the Food-Water-Energy Nexus challenge. \nThe call aims to develop more resilient\, applied urban solutions that bring inter- and trans-disciplinary research and innovation together from across the globe\, to benefit a much wider range of stakeholders. The rapid urbanization of the world’s population underscores the importance of this focus. JPI Urban Europe and Belmont Forum have partnered to ensure a maximum audience across physical\, natural\, social sciences and arts and humanities as well as policy and decision makers and stakeholders. Webinar The aim of the webinar is to give information on the call to potential applicants; companies\, cities\, municipalities\, regions\, consumers\, citizens’ representatives\, NGOs and research organisations. \nA further purpose is to facilitate match-making and partner search between international partners. Participants are encouraged to prepare a three-minute pitch of their projects and define what partners they are looking for. We also encourage publishing information on the Linkedin page and the Future Earth platform. Attending the webinar is free of charge and details on how to access the webinar is in the menu on the right.
