SUMMARY:WUF11: Green and Blue Infrastructure in Cities - Innovative Solutions for Governing Food-Water-Energy Nexus in Cities
DESCRIPTION:This event will be based on the results of the projects supported by JPI Urban Europe and the Belmont Forum as part of the Sustainable Urbanisation Global Initiative – SUGI: Understanding Innovative Initiatives for Governing Food\, Water and Energy Nexus in Cities (IFWEN) and Climate Resilient Urban Nexus CHoices: operationalising the Food-Water- Energy Nexus (CRUNCH). Participants will learn about the importance of Green and Blue Infrastructure (GBI) to improve Food-Water-Energy Nexus (FWEN) in urban settlements. This is important for advancing sustainable urban development because urban resource systems are under stress due to climate change and growing populations\, and many urban and environmental experts would agree that conventional siloed approaches often miss opportunities to manage these resources more efficiently. Food-Water-Energy Nexus is a powerful concept for showing the interdependencies between systems. Cities can play an important role in managing resources\, but are often unable to integrate different mandates or work across sectors. \n  \nProgram \nThe program will be comprised of: \n\nIntroduction to the training (5 minutes) – Introduction of the participants and objectives of the meeting\nProject presentations (40 minutes) – Each project will present to the participants the key results related to Food-Water-Energy Nexus in cities;\nDiscussions (40 minutes) – Participants will reflect on the opportunities and challenges for using GBI in their cities\nConcluding remarks (5 minutes) – Discuss the main takeaway points from the FWEN in cities\n\nThe event takes place at the JPI UE/DUT booth. \n  \nProfile of the training instructors \nJose A. Puppim de Oliveira is a faculty member at FGV (Fundação Getulio Vargas)\, Brazil. He leads the consortium of the research project IFWEN. \nJohannes Riegler is the Stakeholder Involvement Officer at JPI Urban Europe. \nJoanna Bach-Głowińska\, (Dr. Eng. Arch.)\, is an Adjunct Professor at Gdansk University of Technology in Poland\, the Principal Investigator at both ERA-Net Urban Transformation Capacities (ENUTC)  and of the research project CRUNCH. \n  \nLead organizations \nICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability \nFGV – FUNDAÇÃO GETULIO VARGAS \nJPI Urban Europe \n

SUMMARY:5th Annual Place Making Week
DESCRIPTION:Placemaking Week Europe is Europe’s founding and largest placemaking festival. In the spirit of collaboration and inspiration\, over 400 practitioners meet every year to share knowledge\, learn and network. The host of the fifth edition is the city of Pontevedra in Spain. A place that for the last twenty years has been an example of how to organise a city around people. Drawing on their positive example\, we will look to the future together. \nThe CUE Transition Pathway has planned a workshop session titled “Building radically regenerative public spaces” for the Place Making Week. The workshop invites participants to envision urban areas in 2050 and how regenerative urbanism can help human societies address and cope with anthropogenic climate events that are currently increasing both in frequency and magnitude. Using fictional city typologies as point of departure\, participants will explore and build a vision for 2050 streetscapes. \nFind more information about the event!

SUMMARY:A European task: Integrating refugees in the housing market
DESCRIPTION:With the so-called refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 onwards\, the immigration of refugees to several European countries has massively increased. This has resulted in enormous pressure for adequate short-term accommodation for these people and their long-term access to the housing market. With the influx of refugees from Ukraine since February 2022\, access to the housing market as well as the provision of affordable housing are once again extremely pressing issues. In addition\, the question of affordable housing does not only arise for refugees\, but also includes other disadvantaged groups on the housing market in different European cities. \nExperiences and approaches from Austria\, Germany\, and Sweden provide indications of the prevailing barriers at the housing markets and strategies to overcome them. During the Online-Event\, representatives from academia and practice will highlight existing approaches and strategies in the housing market. \nThe registration deadline is September 26\, 2022. SUMMARY:The 2022 Urban Research Conference
DESCRIPTION:2022 was the year that cities would recover from the woes of the pandemic and tackle rising social and economic inequality. Then Putin invaded Ukraine.\nNow cities are faced with heightened geopolitical tensions\, alongside increased violence\, demonstrations and divisions following\, among other things\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, the extreme weather events associated with climate change\, the rise of alt-right and left movements\, fallen democracies\, reinvigorated authoritarianism and unequal treatment of migrants. \nThis year’s conference is concerned with\, on the one hand\, emerging conflicts\, seen as a dynamic interplay between different discourses and actors in «the politics of conflictual governance». On the other hand\, it pays attention to social forces that draw in the opposite direction\, uniting ordinary citizens in political mobilisation through practices of daily life\, and paving the ground for new forms of interaction between citizens and city representatives in «the practices of collaborative governance». We scrutinise the role of institutions and institutional adaptiveness towards new inclusionary initiatives. \nFind the full programme here.

The upcoming talk will involve discussions about an envisioned future with art and design based on the latest research and innovation knowledge. How can urban dilemmas be addressed with aesthetics\, what is there to be achieved – what will a sustainable urban future be and look like? \nImagination as a tool for urban transformation\nOur current crisis is not only about the environment and the climate\, but also a crisis of the imagination. We seem simply not capable of imagining the sustainable societies of tomorrow\, but are stuck in current modes of thinking and old solutions that were perhaps useful to solve old problems. There is a need to emphasize the importance of imagination\, creativity and the cultural sector\, to support and enable the transformation of our societies towards a sustainable\, climate neutral and just future. \nThe thematics of art and design are closely linked to the upcoming call within the ERA-Net Cofund Urban Transformation Capacities (ENUTC) – learn more via the call pre-announcement. \nPanel guests\n• Cecilie Sachs Olsen\, Professor of Art in Society \nCementing the importance of the arts in imagining urban transformation\, Cecile researches the role of artistic practice in forming societal imaginaries and in materially making and shaping urban space\, lives and communities. Currently at the Department of Art\, Design and Drama at Oslo Metropolitan University\, she develops creative methods for urban research and explores how artistic practice can be used as a framework to analyse and re-imagine urban development\, space and politics. Cecile is also engaged in the JPI Urban Europe (ENUTC) project Conflict in Transformations (CONTRA)\, researching sustainable futures through arts-based methods\, conceptualized as “drama labs”\, as a new manifestation of urban living labs. \nWebsite: oslomet.no/en/about/employee/cecilies/ \n• Bettina Schwalm\, Experience Designer \nAs an Experience Designer\, Strategist and Researcher\, Bettina Schwalm has a long experience serving society\, culture and the environment. She is educating and coaching teams in innovation and future thinking\, always with a strong focus on behavioural studies. She is the Center Director for Konstfack (University of Arts\, Crafts\, and Design) at the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship and a guest lecturer in various institutions worldwide. Her interdisciplinary approach is at the intersection of science and design\, developing hands-on tools and visions for organisations and the public realm. Her recently Vinnova-funded speculative design project “Signs of Change”\, in collaboration with Radical Norms\, explores aspects of Urban Transformation and the impact of extreme climate futures through public street signs. \nWebsites: bettinaschwalm.com\, signsofchange.io \n• Jenny Kornmacher\, Innovations Director EIT Culture & Creativity \nSpecialized in creative industries development and international relations\, Jenny is an experienced leader within the cultural sectors of Europe. Based in the south of Sweden working for Region Skåne\, she is also an Interim Innovations Director for the EIT Culture & Creativity. Jenny is ambitious to connect industries and creative sectors in order to support the innovation potential in a larger context\, and through the business oriented Breakthrough Lab concept\, innovation is promoted. She holds a Master of Arts focused in cultural studies/critical theory and analysis from Leuphana University of Lüneburg. \nWebsite: Jenny Kornmacher\, Linkedin \n• Bruno Georges\, Grand Projects and Innovations Director \nBruno is an innovations director for major project development in the private engineering group OteisLab\, and previously the creator and manager for sustainable design office ITF. Bruno is engaged in having a longer time perspective of sustainable projects\, rather than decades. For radical urban transformation\, culturally and financially – there is a need for a change in imagining the future. \nWebsite: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bruno-georges-839466104/?originalSubdomain=fr \nUrban lunch talk webinar series\nThe urban lunch talk is part of a webinar series to discuss and synthesize cross-cutting research and innovation\, with diverse stakeholders across Europe\, and beyond. The webinar is more of a listening experience\, so that you can enjoy your lunch or taking a walk at the same time. The urban lunch talk is live-recorded in Zoom\, and later published for the JPI Urban Europe’s Youtube channel.

SUMMARY:Urban Living Labs: Experiments for designing radical urban transitions
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade\, experimental approaches such as urban living labs have become widely spread across Europe and the world. Urban living labs (ULLs) are tools for transforming urban areas by engaging different publics\, from local public administrations and residents\, to businesses\, NGOs\, civil society organisations\, and more. Experimental approaches like ULLs can facilitate the co-design of radical transitions towards greater liveability in urban areas. DUT invites urban living lab managers to join the workshop “Experiments for designing radical urban transitions” to exchange perspectives\, experiences and ideas. You have the opportunity to share your insights about the requirements to take the big leaps forward towards sustainability and \nliveability. \nThis workshop aims at providing a platform for urban living labs managers to connect\, discuss and learn from each other. You will be identifying critical features\, methodologies and aspects\, which facilitate learning in and from urban living lab experiments. This includes identifying challenges\, barriers and potentials for radical urban transformations. Additionally\, we will discuss the essential conditions for ULLs such as funding requirements\, open governance structures and understanding participatory and co-creative process designs for applying urban living labs designing (radical) urban transitions. \nRegistration closed.\n

SUMMARY:AGORA Thematic Dialogue: 15-minute City – a concept for all?
DESCRIPTION:Registration closed.\nIf you are interested to attend the event\, please email us and we will look in to the possibilities. Note that this event is by invitation only. \nLearning from local needs to tackle critical issues of urban mobility transitions\nWhile providing an attractive narrative for urban mobility transition\, 15-minute City concepts need to be specified further when focusing on implementation and adaptation in different contexts. Building on the experience and practice of Romanian cities taking part in the EU Cities Mission “Bucharest – District 2\, Cluj-Napoca and Suceava”\, we invite participants from policy\, research\, business and civil society to discuss local challenges and critical issues for 15-minute City approaches. We connect this AGORA event with the meeting of projects in the ERA-Net Urban Accessibility and Connectivity (ENUAC) and embed it in a framework programme offering attractive opportunities for engaging and networking around topics of urban mobility transition. Through the AGORA Dialogue\, we want to start collaborating and co-creating on positions from policy and science towards proximity-oriented concepts and take these further in a position paper within the frame of the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership (DUT). \nFeel free to sign up for the workshop!
