DESCRIPTION:With the current form of the Urban Agenda for the EU (UAEU) coming to an end\, it’s essential that we capitalise on its achievements\, explore linkages and synergies with other relevant initiatives and feed into its renewal process. In this context\, a series of three webinars will be organised in line with the Green\, Just and Productive city dimensions\, as established under the New Leipzig Charter (NLC). SUMMARY:Open synthesis webinar: Results and insights from ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures (ENSUF)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the synthesis webinar for ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures (ENSUF). Learn about ENSUF’s policy connections and results from in-depth interviews with projects about legacy and impact. Enjoy a summary and a preview of the ENSUF synthesis report to launch on the JPI Urban Europe web later in September. Watch the recording on the bottom of this page.\n\nIn 2017\, fifteen R&I projects were approved in the Smart Urban Futures call\, a collaboration between JPI Urban Europe and the European Commission\, to address urgent and long-term urban challenges by co-creating ideas and projects. Stakeholders in over 70 cities and 20 countries have since then been involved in the projects and published project results in a variety of forms. \nThe ENSUF projects have challenged “business as usual” in urban infrastructures and governance. They reflect on “smart urban futures” by means of how learning\, narratives\, and place development is currently practiced in European cities and where this is taking us\, and suggest ways forward by uncovering the added value of their results and integrated approaches. About half of the ENSUF projects have practised methods central to urban living labs\, and there are even signs of “Urban Living Labs 2.0” amongst the ENSUF projects. SUMMARY:Workshop: 15-minute Cities for African Urban Areas
DESCRIPTION:Addressing the challenges in urban areas are crucial to solve the overarching grand societal and planetary challenges in the contemporary world. While goals and strategies\, such as Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals are global ambitions\, enhancing sustainability and liveability on local urban scale is key. This workshop aims at developing visions on sustainable and liveable urban areas in Africa\, discuss the pathways to make those visions a reality and how international cooperation can support local urban transitions. \nThe concept of 15-minute cities provides a framework for a fundamental redesign and the chance to overcome path-dependent developments. 15-minute cities are characterized by compact\, integrated city or neighborhood structures with a high degree of self-sufficiency and local sustainability. Further\, they are tightly interlinked with adjacent neighborhoods and integrated in an effective interregional transportation network and sustainable supply chains. A fair public spaces distribution is required to encourage active mobility modes. Mobility within urban areas is complemented with easy to access longer-distance modes which connect regionally. In terms of sustainable supply chains for goods and services\, there is the need for bundling resources through cooperation\, coordination and sharing among shippers\, carriers as well as users and integrating environmentally friendly transport modes\, alternative vehicles and active mobility for delivering goods and services. \nAim of Workshop\n\nIdentify the most pressing issues\, challenges and dilemmas regarding Driving Urban Transitions in African countries\nIdentify access points to jointly address those issues\, challenges and dilemmas in cooperative schemes\nExchange around opportunities for international stakeholders to continue the dialogue and engage in the partnership\n\nWhat you can expect from the workshop?\n\nExchange with peers and experts addressing urban challenges and transforming urban areas to sustainable and livable places\nCo-creation: engage in interactive exercises to jointly reflect on how urban actors such as local administrations\, municipalities\, businesses\, researchers\, social innovators and inhabitants can drive transformations\nContribute to a collaborative publication at the end of the workshop series\nNetworking: You are welcome to connect to the AGORA community\, the network of urban actors maintained by JPI Urban Europe\n\n  \nThis workshop is part of the “Driving Urban Transition towards Sustainable and Just Futures in Africa” workshop series organised by JPI Urban Europe\, START and ICLEI Africa. SUMMARY:Workshop: New Priority Themes for the Urban Agenda for the EU
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in cites of equality\, green cities\, food\, and sustainable tourism? With the start of the Slovene Presidency\, an open and informal process was launched to explore new priority themes for the Urban Agenda for the EU (UAEU). As part of this process\, the EUKN\, Eurocities\, and CEMR\, with the cooperation of CoR\, worked on the first prototype of a Linking Matrix: a tool to validate the relevance of new suggested themes. On 6 October you can join a workshop by the Slovene Presidency. \nThese proposals and the linking matrix prototype will be presented at the UDG on 28 September. It is expected that a limited number\, preferably two\, of the proposed themes will be chosen for testing the process and establishing of new UAEU Thematic Partnerships in 2022. SUMMARY:Innovate4Cities 2021 Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Innovate4Cities Conference will be an international gathering at the nexus of cities\, climate change science and innovation. This groundbreaking meeting will be co-hosted by UN-Habitat and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM). It will bring together over 1\,000 city leaders\, scientists\, researchers\, innovators\, academics\, youth and business people to advance pragmatic and action oriented research and science that will help cities reduce their carbon footprint and increase resilience to climate change. \nThe conference program is built around the core themes of the Global Research and Action Agenda on Cities and Climate Change Science (GRAA) developed in Edmonton in 2018. There have been many developments in the urban sustainability agenda since Edmonton\, in particular COVID-19 has transformed cities\, widening existing inequalities\, plunged new actors into financial hardship and exposed new vulnerabilities. When we rebuild cities in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic we must ensure that the green recovery is inclusive and provides co-benefits\, such as improving health outcomes\, promoting economic development\, delivering jobs and addressing gender and racial inequities. In light of these developments\, Justice & Equity\, Health & Wellbeing and Digitalisation/Smart Cities have been added as cross-cutting themes for the conference and will be actively considered in the GRAA review process that will take place before\, during and after the conference. \n \nTopical Themes:\nBuilt and Blue/Green Infrastructure:\nInfrastructure is essential for providing critical urban services and building resilience against climate change. However\, it is paramount that growth in infrastructure\, particularly in the global South\, does not result in a carbon lock-in as this will ultimately hinder cities’ ability to mitigate emissions. Innovation in low-carbon infrastructure options and nature-based solutions are thus central to the sustainable development agenda\, particularly given the range of co-benefits provided in relation to health\, well-being\, biodiversity\, and enhanced urban amenity. \nTopic ideas: low-carbon construction techniques\, affordable low-carbon building materials\, carbon storage in infrastructure\, clean transport\, energy transitions\, bioclimatic designed infrastructure\, nature-based solutions. \nSustainable Consumption & Production:\nIn terms of unsustainable resource consumption\, cities are at the heart of the problem\, consuming 75% of the world’s resources and producing 50% of global waste (Ellen MacArthur Foundation). However\, cities as centres of economic\, social and cultural exchange\, are well-positioned to tackle these problems. Innovation is needed in this domain in order to accelerate cleaner production\, improve the circularity of material flows and encourage the diffusion of low-carbon materially sufficient lifestyles. \nTopic ideas: Circular economy\, urban metabolism\, Waste management and closed loop food systems\, Industrial symbiosis\, Sustainable and resilient logistic systems\, Sharing economy\, Sustainable lifestyle. \nSign up for the conference here.

DESCRIPTION:JPI Urban Europe\, together with the European Commission\, will host a participatory lab at the 19th European Week of Regions and Cities 11- 14 October. The session takes place on 13 October\, 11.30am – 1.00pm CEST and explores how national and EU programming support can step up the game towards 2030.\n \nBoth the Green Deal and Horizon Europe focus on fair\, green and digital transitions for the EU to shape sustainable and liveable futures. Complementing this\, the New European Bauhaus highlights the role of design and culture. \nFrom the urban dimension perspective\, the green and digital transitions are inextricably linked with questions of liveability\, urban design governance\, urban robustness and regeneration\, placemaking\, (bio)diversity\, democracy\, consumption\, climate change\, etc. If these ambitions are to succeed\, integrated approaches to accommodate a broad diversity of actors and practices are required. It is interlinked with the Urban Agenda for the EU as a novel multi-level governance approach that aims to strengthen the “urban dimension” of EU policies. With the first generation of partnerships of the Urban Agenda for the EU coming to an end\, the process of paving the way for an even stronger Urban Agenda has been initiated and advanced under the Trio Presidency of Germany\, Portugal and Slovenia. This process will conclude with the adoption of the Ljubljana Agreement at the Informal Ministerial on Urban Development on 26 November 2021. \nHow can the continuation of the Urban Agenda for the EU contribute to the implementation of the principles of the New Leipzig Charter\, and vice versa? How can we bring an urban dimension into EU-policies\, such as the “Green Deal”? \nThe event is aimed at the stakeholders of the European “urban development community” with a strong interest in the EU “urban dimension”. Joana is an urban planner and geographic information scientist at Birkbeck University of London. Tao Feng has been working on various topics linked to travel demand forecasting\, traffic network analysis\, transport air quality analysis\, and choice of housing and work. He has also contributed to big data and travel surveys\, by developing algorithms to efficiently transform GPS data. Tao Feng has been a part of the DESENT project under the call of ENSCC.\n\nU-PASS and SIMETRI is funded in the pilot call Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas organized by JPI Urban Europe and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). \n\n\nBackground: 15-minute cities – Rethinking the urban mobility system\n\nConcepts for the 15 Minute City are gaining traction throughout Europe and the world. Amplified by urban vulnerabilities and weaknesses which have been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic\, rethinking urban areas along the principles of the 15 Minute City has been illustrated as one central pathway towards sustainability and liveability. The 15 Minute City is one priority of the upcoming Driving Urban Transitions Partnership which JPI Urban Europe is currently designing. SUMMARY:Energy Lunch Talk 2 – Instruments for collective renovation of the built environment
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Energy Cities will discuss how the renovation of existing districts can be accelerated. How do we move from the renovation / retrofitting of singular (private) houses one by one to a collective approach (e‧g. additional subsidies\, renovation coaches\, energy houses\, one-stop-shop or other support schemes)? SUMMARY:9th European Summit of regions and cities
DESCRIPTION:The European Summit of regions and cities is a gathering of local representatives organised every two years by the European Committee of the Regions to discuss the EU’s future challenges. The 9th European Summit of Regions and Cities\, scheduled to take place in Marseille (France) on 3-4 March 2022\, in the context of the incoming French Presidency of the Council of the EU. \nThe Summit aims to engage local and regional politicians across the EU in the debate on the Future of Europe and to show how Europe’s regions and cities play a vital role in placing citizens at the heart of Europe. \nThis event will gather high-level participants and facilitate political exchanges over major societal challenges that cities and regions currently face. Discussions will centre around resilience and how to strive for it\, in terms of health\, climate change and digitalisation. \nParticipants will also explore themes linked to cohesion and recovery. Local and regional leaders will seek the most efficient models to implement both urban and rural recovery and explore the possibilities to collaborate within and outside their respective borders by 2050. The Future of the European Union will also be looked at from the perspective of its enlargement policy and of a  renewed Euro-Mediterranean partnership. \nThe Summit will further allow for in-depth discussions on democracy\, with a specific focus on women in local politics and on Youth engagement. \nThe CoR will present its contribution to the Conference on the future of Europe at the Summit in Marseille\, one week ahead of the last plenary of the Conference. \nTo register to the Summit\, click here
