SUMMARY:SEiSMiC Final Conference: The Launch of JPI UE Stakeholder Involvement Platform
DESCRIPTION:SEiSMiC and JPI Urban Europe welcomes you to exchange\, discussions and celebration as the SEiSMiC networks are handed over to JPI Urban Europe and the platform for stakeholder involvement (SIP) is started. \nThe FP7 funded SEiSMiC project is reaching its formal completion by the end of October. SEiSMIC has brought together a large number of urban stakeholders in ten different countries by conducting continuous exchange on European level.\nAlthough the project is about to end\, JPI Urban Europe will continue the dialogue with the SEiSMiC stakeholders\, build on the experiences of the national networks and establish a platform for stakeholder involvement (SIP) to co-create the future strategic orientation of the initiative. SIP will be a very important tool to safeguard the ambition and principles of the JPI UE: \n> To enhance the cities capacities for transition\n> Tackling the complexity of urban development and sustainability\n> Teaming up and interlinking with cities and urban stakeholders\n> Raising the impact and supporting the exploitation of technological and social innovation. \nThis conference will present and interactively discuss the main achievements along the SEiSMiC journey before the networks are handed-over to JPI Urban Europe. Additionally\, the SIP will be started by strategic dialogues on pressing topics for urban development\, research and innovation as well as the framework conditions for the SIP in interactive settings. You will receive the detailed agenda in due course.\nSEiSMiC and JPI Urban Europe would like to welcome you in Brussels for two days of discussions\, exchange and celebration. \nAGENDA\nREGISTRATION

SUMMARY:SURF Academy 2016/2017
DESCRIPTION:In cooperation with the VerDuS programme SURF (Smart Urban Regions of the Future)\, the Research Schools TRAIL and NETHUR organize a 4-ECTS education program. This programme is tailor made for recently started SURF-researchers (PhD students\, Postdocs\, researchers) in both the 5 national projects and the 13 international projects (ENSCC-call JPI Urban Europe).\n Join the programme to improve your knowledge\, sharpen your skills and become a wellinformed member of the SURF community. Attending the SURF Academy also enhances the cohesion and possible synergetic effects between the SURF projects. All recently started SURF researchers are expected to participate in the Academy. The SURF Consortia Seminar on Friday 10 March is meant for the entire SURF community\, i.e all members of the consortia of the 5 national and the 13 international SURF-projects. \nSURF Academy: mixed programme\nThe programme provides a mix of fundamental knowledge about the SURF domain as well as skills for performing multidisciplinary research with SURF-practitioners. It is characterized by alternating lectures and assignments\, many interaction moments between students and lecturers\, feedback on individual research projects\, and workshops. \nFirst week (10-13 October 2016)\nOn Monday we start with an introduction and a workshop on valorization. You will learn how to do a short pitch about (the societal value of) your project. On Tuesday transport systems and transport innovations are the central issue. On Wednesday we focus on cities and urban systems\, including innovations. We will also visit AMS (the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions). Thursday morning is about transitions in the urban domain; in the afternoon governance is the central theme. \nSecond week (6 -9 March 2017)\nOn Monday we reflect on the first week and responsible innovation (ethical and societal aspects of technology) will be discussed. On Tuesday ‘society’ is central again with a part on Cost Benefit Analysis and a part on the role of citizens and self-organisation. Wednesday is all about cooperation with non-academic partners and knowledge co-creation. Thursday is about knowledge valorization and dissemination. \nPDF with more information

SUMMARY:Government and Housing in a Time of Crisis: Policy\, Planning\, Design and Delivery
DESCRIPTION:In the political economies of the West the provision of social and affordable housing has been subject to major change in recent decades. Nowhere is this more evident than in local and regional government. Today\, local authority architects are mostly a thing of the past; house construction by regional administrators is increasingly rare; and local government management of housing is in decline. In place of these models are a plethora of policies\, approaches and players. In the UK context these include ALMOs\, stock transfers\, Section 106 Agreements\, right-to-buy\, and the growth of Housing Associations etc. In other parts of Europe and across the developed world\, the names of such initiatives and groups differ\, but the issues in play remain the same.\nMore information

SUMMARY:European Cities in Dynamic Competition – Urban Governance\, Cooperation\, Competitiveness and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Today\, more than two thirds of citizens of Europe are city dwellers\, and the tendency is increasing. The quality of urban life and technical infrastructure are considered to be crucial to attracting and retaining a skilled labor force and businesses. The social and economic concentration of resources in cities may\, however\, result in negative side-effects like pollution or congestion. Hence cities are both the source of and solution to economic\, environmental and social challenges. Cities in an aging Europe will also need to assert themselves amid increasing digitization and global competition. Managing urban complexity to create sustainable cities will thus be one of the most challenging tasks for European cities in the 21st century.\nMore information

SUMMARY:Cities for Mobility @ Stuttgart City Hall
DESCRIPTION:The importance of cities as living space for people is growing. More than half of the world population today lives in cities. Cities are the engine of economic and social development. They are also the places where the ecological and social challenges of the 21st century are particularly pronounced. Part of these challenges are also the growing mobility and the accessibility of our cities.\nIn the global network Cities for Mobility\, we want to search for common ways towards sustainable mobility – meaning a mobility which is accessible to all\, environmentally-friendly and economy-focused. In this endeavor\, we would like to cooperate closely with experts from the economy\, universities and research institutions as well as nongovernmental organizations.

SUMMARY:“Urban Consequences of Intra-EU mobility” – IMAGINATION/EUKN
DESCRIPTION:Intra-EU mobility from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) to other member states was\, is and will remain an important issue for policy makers\, both in sending and in receiving regions\, for it will continue at a relatively high level and many of the migrants will stay for a longer time. Since most migrants settle in cities\, the key question is how to manage the urban consequences?  \nSome politicians see intra-EU migration as a serious threat to our societies. Others seem to brush aside the negative aspects. Research evidence is needed to inform policy makers.   \nThe multi-annual research project “Urban implications and governance of CEE migration in Europe” (IMAGINATION) has researched the impacts of intra-EU mobility on receiving cities and offers concrete policy responses. The results of the research project\, including a practical handbook for policy-makers\, will be discussed at the project’s final conference.  \nOn behalf of the IMAGINATION consortium researchers and the EUKN\, I am pleased to invite you to the conference “Urban Consequences of Intra-EU mobility”. The conference brings together researchers\, policy makers and practitioners to discuss policies and practices in addressing and coordinating intra-EU mobility.   \n This conference will take place on:\nMonday May 23rd 2016 \nFrom 12.00 to 18.00\nAt ‘Het Timmerhuis’\, Rotterdam\, Netherlands  \nThe conference is free of charge but registration is compulsory\nPlease register on the EUKN site (www.eukn.eu)\, by May 13th at the latest. Registration will take place on a first-come first-serve basis. We can accommodate 80 participants. So register quickly!
