SUMMARY:“Urban Consequences of Intra-EU mobility” – IMAGINATION/EUKN
DESCRIPTION:Intra-EU mobility from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) to other member states was\, is and will remain an important issue for policy makers\, both in sending and in receiving regions\, for it will continue at a relatively high level and many of the migrants will stay for a longer time. Since most migrants settle in cities\, the key question is how to manage the urban consequences?  \nSome politicians see intra-EU migration as a serious threat to our societies. Others seem to brush aside the negative aspects. Research evidence is needed to inform policy makers.   \nThe multi-annual research project “Urban implications and governance of CEE migration in Europe” (IMAGINATION) has researched the impacts of intra-EU mobility on receiving cities and offers concrete policy responses. The results of the research project\, including a practical handbook for policy-makers\, will be discussed at the project’s final conference.  \nOn behalf of the IMAGINATION consortium researchers and the EUKN\, I am pleased to invite you to the conference “Urban Consequences of Intra-EU mobility”. The conference brings together researchers\, policy makers and practitioners to discuss policies and practices in addressing and coordinating intra-EU mobility.   \n This conference will take place on:\nMonday May 23rd 2016 \nFrom 12.00 to 18.00\nAt ‘Het Timmerhuis’\, Rotterdam\, Netherlands  \nThe conference is free of charge but registration is compulsory\nPlease register on the EUKN site (www.eukn.eu)\, by May 13th at the latest. Registration will take place on a first-come first-serve basis. We can accommodate 80 participants. So register quickly!

SUMMARY:Design & The City
DESCRIPTION:Design & The City explores citizen-centered design approaches for the smart city. Central theme is the role of design(ers) to create opportunities and practices for citizens\, (social) entrepreneurs and policy makers towards more liveable\, sustainable and sociable urban futures. And in what way changes the role of the professional in the process of city making\, and which new design methodologies\, approaches and roles they have taken on towards the creation of a sociable smart city.\nIn 2016\, the year of Dutch EU chairmanship\, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the Knowledge Mile\, organise an innovative programme: the four-days conference Design & The City is one of the main events. Martijn de Waal\, renown ‎Researcher Urban Media & Citizen Empowerment at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool van Amsterdam)\, is chief producer of this event.\nClick here for additional information.

SUMMARY:Routes to Urban Research and Innovation – RURI
DESCRIPTION:Routes to Urban Research and Innovation – RURI\nhow to make your way into Urban Europe of the Future\nFor urban professionals and researchers there are multiple options to participate in European research projects on urban development. An example of this is the projects of the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe (JPI Urban Europe). What is the added value of European knowledge development on urban areas? And what is the best way to participate to gain this value?\nThe RURI-event on Wednesday April 13 in Amsterdam will allow municipal managers\, policy makers\, researchers and other stakeholders to come together as part of one of the events for the Dutch presidency of the EU. The event will take place at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam.\nSeveral speakers from European urban areas will tell about their experiences. In several parallel workshops knowledge\, best practices and experiences will be shared and the focus will lie on the ‘know-how’ of European knowledge development.\nWhat is the added value of European collaboration for knowledge development on urban areas? And which best practices are there for well-balanced urban research consortia and for knowledge strategies?\nThe event will take place in English.\nPlease note April 13\, 14.00 – 19.00 hour in your calendar and sign up here.\nYou will receive an invitation with the full program later.\nThe RURI-event is an initiative of VerDuS\, which aims at connecting Sustainable Cities. SUMMARY:Greening the Economy: Sustainable Cities – A Massive Open Online Course starts on 18 January 2016
DESCRIPTION:How can we shape urban development towards sustainable and prosperous futures?\nThis course will explore sustainable cities as engines for greening the economy. We place cities in the context of sustainable urban transformation and climate change. Sustainable urban transformation refers to structural transformation processes – multi-dimensional and radical change – that can effectively direct urban development towards ambitious sustainability and climate goals.\nWe will connect the key trends of urbanization\, decarbonisation and sustainability. We will examine visions\, experiments and innovations in urban areas. We will look at practices (what is happening in cities at present) and opportunities (what are the possibilities for cities going forwards into the future).\nWe bring together a collection of diverse short films and key short readings on sustainable cities as well as interactive forums and a practical assignment to create an online learning community. This course utilizes films and reports on sustainable cities by WWF\, the Economist Intelligence Unit and ongoing research projects.\nSee introduction film\nSign up here\n
