SUMMARY:Urban Lunch Talk 12: Taking action on the urban land-use and infrastructure dilemma
DESCRIPTION:What role does urban design play in the food-water-energy nexus? How will the liveable and healthy city be achieved in the new decade- and  post the Covid-19 pandemic? Even though there are no “one size fits all”-answers to urban dilemmas around land-use\, health and infrastructures\, this webinar will explore some lessons learned. Listen to the recording on our YouTube channel! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou are currently viewing a placeholder content from YouTube. To access the actual content\, click the button below. Please note that doing so will share data with third-party providers. \n More Information \n Unblock content Accept required service and unblock content \n \n \n\nPoint of Departure…\nPublic spaces in cities are ideally attractive to all and spaces for wellbeing and health (for example stimulating people to move). Cities and urban areas in general attract people and create positive effects out of agglomeration\, density\, and diverse and intersecting infrastructures and facilities. There are risks involved and increasingly wicked problems around congestion and accessibility\, loss of identity or demand/waste of natural resources. Urban areas may succumb to conflict and clashes between powers\, mismanagement of transportation flows and existing tensions. Increased spatial and social inequalities between different types of urban areas may be caused by increasing economic polarisation\, segregation and gentrification dynamics\, suburban sprawl\, and shrinking cities (SRIA 2.0\, p. 24). \nThe interactions between food\, water and energy are of great interest to policy\, science and the society at large\, today and even more so in the upcoming decades. Challenges connected with population increase and food shortages\, scarce water and insufficient energy resources needs solutions. Health and welfare can be supported through well-conceived and managed urban built environments and communities. To safeguard this\, these kinds of infrastructures\, many times urban commons\, require robust co-design with multi-stakeholder approaches and long-term provision of technical expertise. A growth of urban frugal innovation might support such developments (SRIA 2.0\, p. 22). \nDiscussion Questions\n– What role does urban design play in the food-water-energy nexus?\n– How will the liveable and healthy city be achieved in the new decade- and post Covid-19?\n– Will the health benefits of open spaces\, outdoor exercise and access to fresh air become more valued by local governments after the Covid-19 pandemic? \nProgram (CEST/Stockholm time)\n12.30 Warm-up project presentation by the M-NEX project (see below)\, chat opens\n13.00 The Urban Lunch Talk starts\n14.00 The Urban Lunch Talk ends\n14.15 Chat closes\n \nMeet…\nAnna Grichting: Anna is the Lead Resesarch Consultant at Qatar University with the M-NEX project\, active in Doha\, Belfast\, Detroit\, Sydney\, Tokyo and Amsterdam. M-NEX focuses on urban design practice and sees urban agriculture as a key facilitator of the food-water-energy-nexus\, as it needs water and energy to become productive. Working directly with living labs in some of the most vulnerable communities in the partner cities\, the team co-designs new food futures with stakeholders that can help make stakeholder less vulnerable to forces disturbing the nexus. \nCristina Clotet Ollé: Cristina is an Architect at the Institut Català del Sòl (INCASÒL)\, member of the Urban Agenda Partnership on Sustainable Use of Land and Nature-Based Solutions. Cristina’s work involves around managing under-used land\, sustainable & circular reuse of spaces and buildings\, and adaptive re-use of the built heritage for a greener Europe. You can read the brochure of the Sustainable Use of Land and nature-based solution partnership here. You find the Handbook on Sustainable and Circular re-use of spaces and buildings\, developed by SUL&NBS and Circular Economy partnerships\, here. \nMarc Sansom: Marc is the Managing Director at SALUS Global Knowledge Exchange and works with the Healthy City Design initative which provides an interdisciplinary forum for policy advisors\, researchers and practitioners around the globe. This years topic is “Designing resilient communities: Recovery\, renewal and renaissance”- see the Call for Papers here. Marc has previously been the chief operations officer for the International Academy for Design & Health and founding editor of World Health Design magazine. \nSimon Bell: Simon works with Landscape Architecture at the Estonian University of Life Sciences and will reflect on results of the BlueHealth initative in relation to planning and designing urban blue spaces for human health and well-being. BlueHealth is a pan-European research initiative investigating the links between environment\, climate and health and focuses on water-based environments in towns and cities. It is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme\, read more here. \nAli Hainoun: Ali works as senior scientist and energy systems analyst at the Austrian Institute of Technology. He is involved in numerous research activities and international projects on sustainable development\, mitigation and decarbonisation of urban energy systems. Ali is the coordinator of SUNEX project which operates in four case study cities (Berlin\, Bristol\, Doha\, Vienna)\, each with different socio-economic and climate characteristics and consumption patterns. The project aims to provide a policy guideline to support urban governance in designing sustainable FWE-strategies. \nSUNEX and M-NEX are part of the Sustainable Urbanisation Global Initiative (SUGI)/Food-Water-Energy Nexus call: jointly established by the Belmont Forum and JPI Urban Europe to bring together fragmented research and expertise across the globe for innovative solutions to the Food-Water-Energy Nexus challenge. \nHost: Caroline Wrangsten\, Assistant Project Manager\, JPI Urban Europe\nChat host: Johannes Riegler\, Stakeholder Involvement Officer\, JPI Urban Europe

SUMMARY:Webinar: Urban Lunch Talk #11- Innovative governance after the 10th World Urban Forum: How can local authorities benefit from rethinking governance?
DESCRIPTION:EDIT: Click here to listen to the recording of this webinar. \nPoint of departure..\nIn the current digital transition\, urban governance may risk implementing suboptimal or segregating technical solutions unless city administrations work with capacity building in public innovation governance and integrated urban planning to expand the current policy scope in many urban digitalisation efforts to include issues such as poverty\, gender\, education\, and marginalised neighbourhoods. Urban governance has an increasingly networked character (in contrast to the ‘government’ ideal in the 20th Century). In general urban governance processes are ‘flattening out’ an assuming a less vertically hierarchical structure\, this is occurring at different paces with varying dynamics depending on the different regions. Inevitably\, it leads to the decentralisation of power. (Source: SRIA 2.0) \nThe quality of urban places in cities is typically not the product of a single intervention but results from the accumulation over time of a complex combination of factors\, behaviours\, and decisions from multiple stakeholders. This webinar is a collaboration with URBAN MAESTRO. The project looks at the ways European cities are being designed and financed\, focusing on innovative ways of generating and implementing urban spatial quality. \nDiscussion questions \n\n\n\n\nMust governance become more “innovative” if we are to succeed with global and European sustainability targets?\nWhat does it mean in practice to build capacity for governance to work with dilemmas in the built environment?\n\nHow can innovative governance play a role in improving the built environment? \nHow can you work with governance issues across different cultures\, in ways that contribute to necessary urban transitions?\n \nMeet…\n\n\n\n\n\nCecilia Bertozzi: Urban governance expert\, Urban Maestro project at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat)\nLiliane Mupende Uwanziga: Independent Consultant-Sustainable Urbanization. Former Director of Urban Planning and Construction\, One Stop Centre- City of Kigali\, Rwanda\nKarina Landman\, Associate Professor\, Department of Town & Regional Planning\, University of Pretoria\, South Africa\nBahanur Nasya\, Eutropian: Architect\, film producer and project manager of PlaceCity. The goal is to gather proven placemaking tools\, test them in real life case studies and make them readily available to every city in Europe.  PlaceCity partners with Placemaking Europe.\nParticipants from anywhere in the world who will join the conversation through the chat room\, polls and Q&A sessions. Previous Urban Lunch Talks have attracted visitors from more than twentyfive different countries\, representing urban administration and public authorities\, research communities\, business representatives and civil society.\n \nMaterial:\n>Watch the recording \n>Presentation slides  \n \n\nFootnote:\nJust like in our Agora\, the Urban Lunch Talks are a meeting space and an invitation to the JPI Urban Europe community. The final content for the talks depends on what you\, as a participant\, bring to the (lunch) table: what urban issue do you want to talk about and why? You can listen to the invited guests\, exchange in the chat\, drop discussion questions in the Q&A function and vote in polls. \nThis event is co-organised with the UN Habitat Urban Maestro project where JPI Urban Europe is one of the advisors. Some of the guests in this talk participated in the tenth World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi 8-13 February 2020 and will share their learnings and take-aways with regards to innnovative governance and sustainable urban places.

DESCRIPTION:EDIT: Find the recorded version of the webinar available in a playlist on our Youtube channel.\n\nWelcome to a talk where we experiment with the thought of having liveable cities rule the world. We dig into the purpose and added values of partnering transnationally for urban transformation\, and its connections to local liveability and prosperity. After the talk\,  JPI Urban Europe will give information about the upcoming transnational call\, ENUAC. The recorded version of this webinar is available on our Youtube channel. \n \nCan global political- and institutional blockages be “hijacked” with local liveability action? In this webinar\, we discuss how liveable and interconnected cities are tools for achieving global agendas.  This is a group discussion of both so called success stories\, but also key dilemmas and transition pathways ahead. Participate in the chat\, vote in polls\, and drop questions in the Q&A. \n\nWhat is the role of cities in shifting global development towards more attractive trajectories?\nIn which ways can transnational cooperation help break out of “business as usual”-ways of doing research and innovation?\nHow can local and national governments around the world work successfully with the outcomes of research- and innovation?\n\nMeet…\n\n\nJose A. Puppim de Oliveira is a faculty member at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) and also teaches at Fudan University (Shanghai) and Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (Quito). SUMMARY:Webinar Urban Lunch Talk #8: From Public Space to Liveability Case
DESCRIPTION:EDIT: Listen to the recording of this webinar on our Youtube channel\, here. \nWelcome to an interactive talk about doing business as (un)usual for liveable public space. How can cities and national stakeholders contribute to high-quality Baukultur\, and what does it mean? What are the synergies in public space dilemmas\, and how can they contribute to more liveable urban areas? You can watch the recording of this webinar in a our playlist on Youtube. \nThere are several dilemmas (competing goals\, interests\, strategies\, etc.) involved in the development and maintenance of urban public space. Ideally\, city stakeholders can integrate issues such as climate\, energy\, mobility\, inclusivness\, placemaking and liveability. However\, addressing one issue or challenge in an urban context might have negative effects in another area. Typical crossings of concerns relate to everyone’ right to the city\, openness to different societal groups\, climate change actions and how to cater for safety and security without promoting increasingly exclusive spaces. ‘Inclusive Public Spaces for Urban Livability’ is one of the thematic priorities of JPI Urban Europe’s SRIA 2.0. In this webinar\, invited speakers lay out ideas for transitions pathways in public space dilemmas. \n\nWhat actions should innovators\, businesses\, researchers\, civil servants and policy makers attend to\, in order to work successfully with the dilemma of public space? What can you do in your specific role?\nHow can cities and national stakeholders contribute to high-quality Baukultur\, and what does it mean?\nAligning with the World Urban Forum 10 thematics: What is the role of culture (human behaviours\, historical culture) in urban public space?\nWhat are the interactions among public spaces\, urban design\, sociology and behaviour research on the one hand- and ICT on the other?\n\n  \nMeet…\n\nChristina Haas is an Urban designer\, architect and Baukultur specialist at the Swiss Federal Office of Culture\, committed to the sustainable promotion of a high-quality Baukultur: “building is culture and buildings create space for culture” as demonstrated in the Davos Declaration. High-quality Baukultur can lead to well designed and lively cities and villages equipped to meet changing social requirements\, while preserving their historical character. How can you contribute to high-quality Baukultur in urban areas?\nPeter Dalsgaard\, Professor of Interaction Design at Aarhus University. Peter explores the use and design of digital systems from a humanistic perspective. On the practical side of things\, he explores how we can use these insights to develop new interactive systems that support and augment creative work\, often in collaboration with external partners in industry and the public sector. Peter is the Principal investigator of PLACED (Place- and Activity-Centric Digital Library Services) which is part of the JPI Urban Europe ENSUF call. PLACED introduces a new type of place- and activity-centric digital library services. Whereas library services typically focus on providing access to a collection of media\, PLACED services support activities.\nBarbara Goličnik Marušić is Head of research at the Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia\, leading and coordinating the interdisciplinary research programme Spatial planning. She holds a PhD in landscape architecture and is mainly involved in multidisciplinary projects concerned with sustainable development\, quality of living and environment-behaviour issues in the context of urban planning and design. Barbara is part of the project C3PLACES (JPI Urban Europe ENSUF call) which uses information and communications technology (ICT) for co-creation of inclusive public places. The project uses a Urban Living Lab approach and is present in Crema (Italy)\, Ghent (Belgium)\, Lisbon (Portugal) and Vilnius (Lithuania). The aim is to advance knowledge on the interactions among public spaces\, urban design\, sociology and behaviour research on the one hand- and ICT on the other. Contact Barbara.\n(Rapporteur) Jonas Bylund(@urbanalys) is the Research and Innovation Officer in JPI Urban Europe. We will enjoy a wrap up and a meta-reflection from Jonas who will link the talk outcomes to the purposes of JPI Urban Europe’s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda and dilemma-driven approaches to urban research and innovation.\n(Host) Caroline Wrangsten\, urban geographer and Assistant Project Manager in JPI Urban Europe.\nParticipants from anywhere in the world who will join the conversation through the chat room\, polls and Q&A sessions. Previous Urban Lunch Talks have attracted visitors from more than twenty different countries\, representing urban administration and public authorities\, research communities\, business representatives and civil society. The results of this webinar will feed into JPI Urban Europe’s AGORA workshop “Dilemmas of Public Space“\, taking place on 20-21 November in Riga. The workshop in Riga will be used by JPI Urban Europe to (a) develop a policy brief on the matter of dilemmas related to urban public spaces (participants are welcome to be listed as contributors); (b) generate input for its 2020 joint call ERA-NET Cofund Urban Transition Capacities; and (c) provide input to the Urban Agenda for the EU Partnership on Security of Public Spaces.\nListen to the recording of this webinar on our Youtube channel\, here.

SUMMARY:Webinar Urban Lunch Talk #7: From Test to Success
DESCRIPTION:EDIT: Listen to the recording of the webinar on our Youtube channel\, here. \nWelcome to a webinar about Urban Living Labs 2.0. What does “success” mean in the context of urban experimentation and Urban Living Labs (and how do you get there in practice?) Can Urban Living Lab approcahes be tools for capacity building on wicked issues? It is time to make the investment in Urban Living Labs more sustainable and the learning more integrated.  \nUrban Living Labs have over the recent decade become a common type of co-creative experimentation\, offering us the opportunity to research and innovate on a wide variety of challenges in everyday setting and test hypotheses and elements to pathways for making transitions towards urban sustainable living. Europe seems particularly a hotspot for this approach. A typical Urban Living Lab will run for as long as a project (usually three years) and after this period data is collected\, results are drawn together\, a summary is written and\, in some situations\, changes in the wider urban context happen. However\, mounting concern by practice\, innovators\, and research is that this last step is too rare and after the project funding stops there is little systematic integration of any of the practical outputs. Is it really about “scaling up” successful results\, or rather about “scaling across”? In sum\, the intended and potential contribution by Urban Living Labs to urban transformation seems unfulfilled. In this webinar we explore going beyond Urban Living Labs towards a different paradigm offered by Living Labs 2.0… \n\nHow can cities\, innovators and researchers best synthesize and make use of results from many different successful test beds\, labs and urban experimenting?\nCan Urban Living Lab approcahes be tools for capacity building on wicked issues?\nHow might we integrate Urban Living Labs approaches into the DNA of Urban Governance? Should we?\n\nBring your knowledge\, projects and concerns to this webinar. Participate and exchnage in the chat\, Q&A and polls. \n  \nMeet…\n\nClaire Gordon is a Senior Researcher at Social Life (@SL_cities)an independent research organisation created by the Young Foundation in 2012 to work internationally on innovation and placemaking. As part of the Bright Future project (JPI Urban Europe ENSUF call)\, Social Life has been leading a process exploring how locally-driven social innovation can help respond to the needs of industrial towns in Slovenia\, Romania\, the Netherlands\, Finland and the UK. Alongside this\, Claire has worked on a range of place-based projects exploring the dynamics of neighbourhoods and how they are impacted and can be supported through development or regeneration. Prior to joining Social Life\, Claire worked as a researcher examining market approaches in development at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS)\, University of London and at the University of Oxford. Her background is in the not-for-profit sector\, having spent several years at a digital inclusion NGO in Brazil.\nMichiel Dehaene is associate professor at the department of Architecture and Urban Planning\, Ghent University\, where he teaches courses in urban analysis and design. He is the chairman of the Flemish Jury of Urban Renewal Projects in Flanders.  His work focuses on sub-urban renewal\, the (planning) history of dispersed urban development\, and sustainable cities. His research includes systematic work on planning and design models to address the urbanizaton of food. Michiel currently works with the project “Urbanising in Place” (JPI Urban Europe SUGI call) which seeks to define components of an “agroecological urbanism”: a model of urbanisation which places food\, metabolic cycles and an ethics of land stewardship\, equality and solidarity at its core. The project works with communities of practice in in both South America and in Europe: Rosario\, Riga\, Brussels and London.\nJochen Wendel is a researcher at the European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER) in Karlsruhe\, Germany. He is coordinating\, together with Pia Laborgne\, the SUGI nexus project  Creating Interfaces project running Urban Living Labs in Poland\, Romania and the U.S. They work with capacity building for the urban food-water-energy (FWE) -nexus\, making the FWE-linkages understandable to the stakeholders (city government\, science\, business and citizens)\, and facilitating cooperation and knowledge exchange among them by using innovative approaches for local knowledge co-creation and participation through Urban Living Labs and Citizen Science. His background is in GIScience and he received his PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado Boulder\, USA. Prior to the Creating Interfaces project\, Jochen has worked on several projects related to smart cities applications\, location-based services\, and data visualization with several state agencies and private companies in the US and Germany. Pia Laborgne is sociologist and researcher at the European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER)\, focusing on urban sustainability strategies\, e.g. regarding citizen participation\, citizen science and stakeholder cooperation. With Jochen Wendel\, she is coordinating the SUGI nexus project “Creating Interfaces”.\nParticipants from anywhere in the world who will join the conversation through the chat room\, polls and Q&A sessions. Previous Urban Lunch Talks have attracted visitors from more than twenty different countries\, representing urban administration and public authorities\, research community\, business representatives and civil society.\nYour rapporteur\, Johannes Riegler\, Stakeholder Involvement Officer in JPI Urban Europe.\nYour host\, Caroline Wrangsten\, urban geographer and Assistant Project Manager in JPI Urban Europe.\n\nListen to the recording of the webinar on our Youtube channel\, here.

SUMMARY:Webinar Urban Lunch Talk #6: From Project Partners to Synergy Soulmates
DESCRIPTION:EDIT: The recording is available on our Youtube channel! \nWhat if integrated approaches and cross-fertilization of issues were made key in urban transformation? How can public authorities and research actors together break out of silos-thinking\, and maximize the outcome for the innovation ecosystem that they are part of? What added values are shaped when projects and their partners work synergy effects? For whom\, how? The recording is available on our Youtube channel! \n\nWelcome to a webinar about using integrated approaches as a key in urban transformation. We will discuss how for example city authorities can partner in ways that has long term and cross-cutting impact on the state of the city. We look into how integrating a wide range of projects and issues can create valuable synergy effects\, both between projects and between projects and their surrounding environments and stakeholders. \nUrban transitions and sustainable urban development involve many different (sub)targets\, which tend to result in strategies or actions pursued in parallel or disconnected from each other. While some targets support each other\, others conflict across administrative departments\, sectors\, or societal groups. The global achievements of the UN Agenda 2030 SDGs\, and the implementation of the Paris Agreement raise several questions on ways of organizing and operating in order to reach targets on time. Both agendas serve a strong urban dimension and assert that ideally\, urban synergetics should underpin liveable and just cities. \nMeet…\n\nJoe Ravetz is Co-Director of the Collaboratory for Urban Resilience & Energy at the Manchester Urban Institute\, University of Manchester.  He has pioneered the art of strategic thinking for sustainable cities and regions\, which brings together environment-climate policy\, urban planning and design\, new economics and governance\, innovation and futures studies\, systems thinking and complexity science. With a background as an architect\, planner and development manager\, he is also a creative graphic facilitator and foresight trainer. Joe works with the LOOPER Living Labs which serve as new models for experimental design and innovation at the urban and community level. They can address practical problems such as air quality\, road safety\, noise\, crime or greenspace and are based on the involvement of stakeholders\, continuous monitoring of changes and direct consideration of their impact on the implementation process. There are Living Labs in Brussels\, Manchester and Verona. The project is part of the JPI Urban Europe ENSUF call.
