SUMMARY:International Transdisciplinarity Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this conference\, Joining Forces for Change\, is to bring together actors from different professional mandates\, disciplines and sectors to engage and discuss practical examples and case studies that approach societal transformation through boundary breaking collaboration. The conference invites practitioners and researchers from government and administrative organisations and agencies\, interest groups from community and business\, and researchers and students from across the university. The overall focus is on what we can learn from our collaborative experiences\, case studies and practices regarding wider societal transformation\, methodological innovations and theoretical development. We will specifically search for “sites for change” in terms of spaces\, practices and learnings where TD research and co-production play a crucial role. \nLearn more about the conference and register here.

SUMMARY:Making Cities Work Conference
DESCRIPTION:Making Cities Work is a series of events\, from 6-11 September 2019\, aimed at contributing to new ways of thinking about the urban economy. \nHow can alliances of policy makers\, citizens\, entrepreneurs and civil society organisations contribute to a more social and sustainable economy? How can we counter the socio-economic polarisation within European cities and regions and\, as a matter of course\, integrate climate protection measures and practices into economic practices?  How can innovation be more inclusive? \nCosmopolis – Center of Urban Research\, Building Brussels and Cities of Making present the Foundational Economy and a well-founded vision of what 21st century cities should be manufacturing within the socio-ecological transition of the urban economy. \nThe Making Cities Work days will end with the JPI Urban Europe financed project Cities of Making final event on the 11th of September. \nTopics:\nFoundational Economy\nThe foundational economy covers those branches of the economy that provide the infrastructures and services of everyday life. These include the universal basic goods and services that every citizen needs\, such as food\, housing\, utilities. As such\, productive and related sectors such as food\, logistics\, construction\, health care and various other sectors deserve a renewed attention from scholars and policy makers alike. \nUrban Manufacturing\nManufacturing – the transformation at scale of physical goods through labour or technology – has traditionally concentrated around cities.  Only recently\, as many European cities find themselves with a dwindeling manufacturing sector\, are questions being asked about what kinds of manufacturing needs cities and what city needs are answered by manufacturing. \nRead more about the events\, register and find the agenda here.

SUMMARY:AESOP Annual Congress 2019
DESCRIPTION:The annual congresses are a wide platform of exchange in the fields of research\, education and practice in planning. This year\, the congress invites scholars and practitioners to reflect on the theme Planning for Transition.\n  \nContemporary cities and territories face significant challenges – natural disasters due to climate change impacts\, ecological crises\, growing socio-economic unrest\, global migration\, political rifts including a rise of right wing factions\, ambitious public works and mega-projects – all of which require new capacities in dealing with such individual and multiple groupings of such challenging and profound changes. \nThe congress invites scholars and practitioners to present and discuss case-studies of cities and projects that have engaged in meeting challenging situations – supporting transitions in urban contexts. Specifically\, it is aimed at offering an understanding of the forms of knowledge\, concepts\, tools\, and skills needed to plan and address transition. Furthermore\, it seeks to explore whether (and how) managing such changes has brought any overall reconsideration of the city design model and towards more general institutional reconfigurations. \nThe LOOPER consortium will be hosting a special session during the event with the topic of learning loops in co-creation to improve public spaces in cities focusing on the use of participatory sensing to identify problems and online and offline participation tools for co-creation in multiple domains (transport\, air pollution\, urban design). \n  \nRead more and register here

SUMMARY:Webinar: Urban Lunch Talk #5 Towards Positive Energy Districts – Defining a framework
DESCRIPTION:Discussions on defining a PED framework are very much in focus\, since there are several European-wide approaches towards the topic (as can be seen in the Booklet of Positive Energy Districts in Europe). A PED framework needs to cover cities’ actual needs and challenges\, deal with conflicting targets\, be precise enough to set up clear implementation strategies and at the same time be wide enough to include different local or regional pre-conditions for PEDs across the continent. Last but not least: How does it relate to integrated urban strategies or climate targets? \nThe Urban Lunch Talk provides an overview of approaches and encourages participants to engage in a discussion on a PED framework. \nMODERATOR:\nMargit Noll\, Chair of MB JPI Urban Europe/FFG\nPANELLISTS:\nHans-Günther Schwarz\, Chair of SET Plan Action 3.2/BMVIT\n\nAnnemie Wyckmans\, Chair of EERA JPSC/NTNU\nPetra Schöfmann\, Expert Energy Center/Urban Innovation Vienna \nParticipants from anywhere in the world who will join the conversation through the chat room\, polls and Q&A sessions. \n\n\nJoin the webinar on Friday\, 7 June at 09.00-10.00 CEST by clicking here.

SUMMARY:The Smart City Guidance Package: the way foward!
DESCRIPTION:The objective of the event is to launch the Smart City Guidance Package (SCGP) by presenting the results of the work led by the Integrated Planning\, Policy and Regulations Action Cluster of the EIP-SCC in order to provide public authorities of cities and communities\, as well as non-governmental actors\, with the necessary support for planning and managing smart city projects. \nIn the initiative “From Planning to Implementation and Upscaling of Smart City Projects” cities\, industry\, NGO’s and knowledge partners collaborate on the exchange of experiences in the integrated planning and implementation of smart city projects\, and their upscaling and replication afterwards to achieve the urban transition to smart and sustainable cities on an increasing scale across Europe. \nThe Smart City Guidance Package (SCGP) wants to support this exchange so other urban stakeholders can benefit from what has already been done by others. It offers inspiration and guides urban stakeholders by bundling experiences and best practices of cities working on ambitious smart city strategies and projects. \nAgenda: The Smart City Guidance Package\nRegister here

SUMMARY:RSU Conference 2019 - PLACES: Challenges and Agendas in the Age of Uncertainties
DESCRIPTION:PLACES is an international conference which invites representatives of various social sciences to reflect upon global challenges for science\, political\, judicial\, economic and communication environment in the age of global uncertainties. \nSince decades science reflects on everlasting transformations of social spaces\, its growing plurality and uncertainties which exist at various levels\, starting from individual identities in the postmodern diversity\, growing beyond conventional borders of social groups\, nations and states. What and where are places in which changes take place? Who and how transform places\, work to restore\, threaten or rethink places where collective identities take place? \nQuestions of durability of various explanatory paradigms produced by social sciences arise. Are social sciences still capable of anticipating future challenges? Can social sciences explain rapid growth of populism and spreading disinterest in democracy across Europe? How is international legislation being merged with growing skepticism towards inclusive role of the EU? How can we resist control of mass media and abuse of social media by unclear global capital aligned with political populism? Is there still a place for social activism in the totality of consumerism? \nThese and many other topical issues indicate rapidity of changes unseen in the previous centuries\, thus producing reality\, which is far too vibrant to be explained in longue duree tempo which dominated social sciences in the previous century. Is there a crisis in the social sciences? What impact has global fluidity and intense networking of on-line and off-line realities on explanatory potential of the social sciences? Are we\, scientists\, losing our capacities? How  and what should be transformed in scientific process? How is an increased automatization and digitalization impacting business and societies? How governments can respond to growing economic imbalances and how to improve economic policies? \nPLACES aims at capturing glimpses of rapid global changes and will each year choose a global topic to reflect upon it in details. We plan a special issue in one of the Baltics related journals which would keep the content of the debates available for wider audience.

SUMMARY:JPI Urban Europe Policy Conference: Urban Transitioning - A Joint Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Launch of the JPI Urban Europe SRIA 2.0 foregrounding dilemmas\nWelcome to the fourth JPI Urban Europe policy conference with the main aim to launch the updated Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA 2.0) and to provide an arena for discussions and exchange on urban transitions. \nThe SRIA 2.0\, with priorities for 2020-2026\, has been refurbished with a view to issues and concerns in the wake of international policies such as UN Agenda 2030 SDG 11\, UN-Habitat New Urban Agenda and Urban Agenda for the EU. In this light and to enhance urban transformation capacities and expertise\, JPI Urban Europe has identified a need to foreground dilemmas in four transition areas and the\nwicked issues emerging in their pathways. \nThe SRIA 2.0 will be launched at the conference and made available at the JPI Urban Europe website. In conjunction with the conference\, other events such as a walkshop in Brussels and meetings within the Making Cities Work call\, the Urban Europe Research Alliance and the SET Plan PED Programme will be arranged. \nJoin the JPI Urban Europe community\nWe invite you to explore the dilemma-driven approach and define first steps towards implementation of the SRIA 2.0. Join urban practitioners\, policymakers\, researchers\, European institutions and organisations and engage in discussions and networking. SUMMARY:Urban Lunch Talks #4 Sustainable Land-use and Urban infrastructures
DESCRIPTION:Cities and urban areas in general attract people and create positive effects out of agglomeration\, density\, and diverse and intersecting infrastructures and facilities. These positive effects of urbanisation are underpinned by integrated urban planning and management by public administrations and across diverse public and private actors. Particularly supported by public engagement and participation in decision- making relating to land-use management\, flows of people\, flows of information and resources\, place-making\, and impact on existing settlements and environs affected. \nAt the same time there are also consequently risks involved and currently increasingly wicked problems around e.g. congestion and accessibility\, loss of identity or demand/waste of natural resources. Furthermore\, urban areas may succumb to conflict and clashes between powers\, mismanagement of transportation flows\, existing tensions intensify and severely delimited progress towards sustainable urbanisation will ensue. Added to this\, increased spatial and social inequalities between city centres and suburbs may be caused by increasing economic polarisation\, segregation and gentrification dynamics\, suburban sprawl\, and shrinking cities in functional regional contexts. \nRegister here \n  \nThe Urban Lunch Talks are an introduction to the dilemma-driven approach of the refurbished Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA 2.0)\, which will be launched at the JPI Urban Europe Policy Conference in February 2019. The SRIA 2.0 has identified four urban dilemmas which will be explored separately in this webinar series.

SUMMARY:Urban Lunch Talks #3 From Urban Resilience to Robustness
DESCRIPTION:Cities and urban areas drive sustainable urban development and realise green agendas\, as well as tackle climate change and safeguard urban eco-economies. A widespread recognition of good practice\, rewards and awards\, and business models that fully address social and environmental targets is central in this respect. As long as e.g. climate change action entails an integrated approach to adaptation that facilitates more liveable cities for people\, and a good balance between mitigation and adaptation measures\, urban resilience can be in synergy with overall well-being and robustness. \nHence\, they need to ensure that various actions to secure urban robustness and resilience\, understood in a wide sense\, does not lead to further or new inequalities. For instance\, climate change mitigation may risk de-prioritisation as climate change adaptation dominate in city authorities’ responses\, which could leave cities and urban areas in various kinds of turbulence generated by climate change. SUMMARY:Urban Lunch Talks #2 Digital Transitions in Urban Governance
DESCRIPTION:How can city practitioners befriend digital transtitions in urban governance – or should they? \nDigitalisation and related technologies are implemented in an accelerating pace across Europe and in many parts of the world’s urban areas. It offers potential for economic development and innovative urban planning and it empowers and engages citizens to shape their urban environments through digital democracy. In urban governance\, digitalisation improves social policies and presents major opportunities to support sustainable solutions if data sovereignity is clear and regulations are in place. \nThough\, in current digital transitions\, urban governance may risk implementing suboptimal technical solutions if city administrations neglect to work with capacity building in public innovation governance. In order to expand the current policy scope in urban digitalisations\, efforts to include issues such as poverty\, education and marginalised neighbourhoods need to be taken into account. \nRegister here \nThe Urban Lunch Talks are an introduction to the dilemma-driven approach of the refurbished Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA 2.0)\, which will be launched at the JPI Urban Europe Policy Conference in February 2019. SUMMARY:Urban Lunch Talks #1 Inclusive Public Spaces for Urban Liveability
DESCRIPTION:What is the value of using a dilemma-driven approach to issues of urban public space? What are the takeaways for practitioners and policymakers? Is public space at risk- and does it even matter? In the first episode of JPI Urban Europe’s new webinar series Urban Lunch Talks\, we will explore the urban dilemma of creating and using inclusive public space. Join the conversation!\nPublic space has a long tradition in European urbanism. It comes with a typical intersection between design and integration of various functions\, services and interests as well as urban identity building. In times of fiscal downturns\, municipalities are looking for new models to finance and manage public space – be it by private business or local stakeholder groups. \n\nShared and public spaces are essential for societal cohension and for overcoming the virtual and physical ‘bubbles’ within and between groups. So what kind of techniques\, knowledge and practices are helpful when faced with this urban dilemma? \nUsing place-specific examples from cities in Eastern Europe we will dig deeper into matters of ownership and models of inclusion and engagement for sustainable change. \nParticipants:\n\nModerator Cissi Askwall\, CEO of the Swedish NGO Public & Science\, who has a long and passionate experience of research communication and public engagement.\nPanellist Yvonne Franz\, Mag. Dr. at University of Vienna\, whose research interests lie in the fields of urban geography with focus on neighbourhood development\, urban revitalisation and gentrification.\nPanellist Katarína Kristiánová\, PhD at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava with a focus on urban green spaces.\nPanellist Alenka Korenjak\, architect and cofounder of prostoRož\, a Slovenian cultural association with the aim to improve public urban space.\nParticipants from anywhere in the world who will join the conversation through chat rooms\, polls and Q&A sessions.\n\n\nRegister here \nRead more about the three following webinars here \nPlease make sure to be there at 12.45 circa to grab a seat. Seats are limited by “first come first serve” principal. Chat room opens 12.45 and closes at 14.15 and participants are welcome to keep the conversation going before\, during and after the webinar.

SUMMARY:EUKN Conference on Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:The Dutch Climate Agreement as well as the latest EU targets aim to reduce CO2 emissions profoundly in the years and decades to come. Making the built environment more sustainable can contribute a great deal. In the Netherlands\, the drastic decision to stop natural gas extraction by 2030 means that 7.8 million homes and 1.1 million office buildings must be made sustainable and natural gas-free. While the Dutch case is unique in some aspects\, other countries face similar challenges regarding the transformation of residential and other buildings into sustainable or even zero-emission neighbourhoods. \nThe Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has commissioned the European Urban Knowledge Network – EUKN to organise a conference that sheds light on this large-scale challenge from a European point of view. The event will bring together Dutch and European experts to share their experiences in transforming the existing building stock into green\, energy-efficient buildings. The conference will focus on successful policy instruments and will explore how authorities and other key actors can create societal support for the massive transformation processes. \nRead more and register on EUKNs webpage \nDocuments:\nInvitation and Programme \n

SUMMARY:Conference: Connecting Sustainable Cities Programme
DESCRIPTION:N.B. The main language at the conference will be Dutch. English-speaking visitors are of course welcome and efforts to work around the language barrier will be made if possible. \nEverywhere in the Netherlands\, urban regions get started with transition and transformation motivated by challenges at the interface between space\, living\, accessibility\, economy and governance. That requires good knowledge. This knowledge comes about in research projects of VerDuS SURF in which scientists work together with policy makers from different authorities and other professionals from urban practice.\n\nOn November 29\, 2018\, you will learn about first research results and exchange knowledge\, information and experience on (sustainable) mobility\, energy transition\, circular economy\, area development from below\, space and living\, the living lab instrument\, climate adaptation and more.\n\nRead more and register here.
