SUMMARY:EUKN Conference on Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:The Dutch Climate Agreement as well as the latest EU targets aim to reduce CO2 emissions profoundly in the years and decades to come. Making the built environment more sustainable can contribute a great deal. In the Netherlands\, the drastic decision to stop natural gas extraction by 2030 means that 7.8 million homes and 1.1 million office buildings must be made sustainable and natural gas-free. While the Dutch case is unique in some aspects\, other countries face similar challenges regarding the transformation of residential and other buildings into sustainable or even zero-emission neighbourhoods. \nThe Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has commissioned the European Urban Knowledge Network – EUKN to organise a conference that sheds light on this large-scale challenge from a European point of view. The event will bring together Dutch and European experts to share their experiences in transforming the existing building stock into green\, energy-efficient buildings. The conference will focus on successful policy instruments and will explore how authorities and other key actors can create societal support for the massive transformation processes. \nRead more and register on EUKNs webpage \nDocuments:\nInvitation and Programme \n

SUMMARY:Urban Lunch Talks #1 Inclusive Public Spaces for Urban Liveability
DESCRIPTION:What is the value of using a dilemma-driven approach to issues of urban public space? What are the takeaways for practitioners and policymakers? Is public space at risk- and does it even matter? In the first episode of JPI Urban Europe’s new webinar series Urban Lunch Talks\, we will explore the urban dilemma of creating and using inclusive public space. Join the conversation!\nPublic space has a long tradition in European urbanism. It comes with a typical intersection between design and integration of various functions\, services and interests as well as urban identity building. In times of fiscal downturns\, municipalities are looking for new models to finance and manage public space – be it by private business or local stakeholder groups. \n\nShared and public spaces are essential for societal cohension and for overcoming the virtual and physical ‘bubbles’ within and between groups. So what kind of techniques\, knowledge and practices are helpful when faced with this urban dilemma? \nUsing place-specific examples from cities in Eastern Europe we will dig deeper into matters of ownership and models of inclusion and engagement for sustainable change. \nParticipants:\n\nModerator Cissi Askwall\, CEO of the Swedish NGO Public & Science\, who has a long and passionate experience of research communication and public engagement.\nPanellist Yvonne Franz\, Mag. Dr. at University of Vienna\, whose research interests lie in the fields of urban geography with focus on neighbourhood development\, urban revitalisation and gentrification.\nPanellist Katarína Kristiánová\, PhD at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava with a focus on urban green spaces.\nPanellist Alenka Korenjak\, architect and cofounder of prostoRož\, a Slovenian cultural association with the aim to improve public urban space.\nParticipants from anywhere in the world who will join the conversation through chat rooms\, polls and Q&A sessions.\n\n\nRegister here \nRead more about the three following webinars here \nPlease make sure to be there at 12.45 circa to grab a seat. Seats are limited by “first come first serve” principal. Chat room opens 12.45 and closes at 14.15 and participants are welcome to keep the conversation going before\, during and after the webinar.

SUMMARY:Workshop: 10th anniversary of the Nectar Accessibility Cluster 6
DESCRIPTION:Accessibility is an important driver for health\, economic development and quality of life. Thus\, the anniversary plans to bring together scholars from various disciplines and countries interested in the topic. The aim of the workshop is to discuss what we have learnt during these prolific ten years moving on to the next decade regarding what is still missing. For this reason\, we encourage presentations of completed research on the topic and also theoretical discussion papers on the progress made in accessibility analysis. \nNECTAR is a European-based scientific association. The primiary objective is to foster research collaboration and exchange of information between experts in the field of transport\, communication and mobility from all European countries and the rest of the world. It is a multidisciplinary social science network which brings together a wide variety of perspecitves on transport and communication problems and their impacts on society in an international perspective. \nRead more about the workshop here \nFor further information see: http://www.nectar-eu.eu.

SUMMARY:Urban Lunch Talks #2 Digital Transitions in Urban Governance
DESCRIPTION:How can city practitioners befriend digital transtitions in urban governance – or should they? \nDigitalisation and related technologies are implemented in an accelerating pace across Europe and in many parts of the world’s urban areas. It offers potential for economic development and innovative urban planning and it empowers and engages citizens to shape their urban environments through digital democracy. In urban governance\, digitalisation improves social policies and presents major opportunities to support sustainable solutions if data sovereignity is clear and regulations are in place. \nThough\, in current digital transitions\, urban governance may risk implementing suboptimal technical solutions if city administrations neglect to work with capacity building in public innovation governance. In order to expand the current policy scope in urban digitalisations\, efforts to include issues such as poverty\, education and marginalised neighbourhoods need to be taken into account. \nRegister here \nThe Urban Lunch Talks are an introduction to the dilemma-driven approach of the refurbished Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA 2.0)\, which will be launched at the JPI Urban Europe Policy Conference in February 2019. The SRIA 2.0 has identified four urban dilemmas which will be explored separately in this webinar series.
