SUMMARY:Making Cities Work Conference
DESCRIPTION:Making Cities Work is a series of events\, from 6-11 September 2019\, aimed at contributing to new ways of thinking about the urban economy. \nHow can alliances of policy makers\, citizens\, entrepreneurs and civil society organisations contribute to a more social and sustainable economy? How can we counter the socio-economic polarisation within European cities and regions and\, as a matter of course\, integrate climate protection measures and practices into economic practices?  How can innovation be more inclusive? \nCosmopolis – Center of Urban Research\, Building Brussels and Cities of Making present the Foundational Economy and a well-founded vision of what 21st century cities should be manufacturing within the socio-ecological transition of the urban economy. \nThe Making Cities Work days will end with the JPI Urban Europe financed project Cities of Making final event on the 11th of September. \nTopics:\nFoundational Economy\nThe foundational economy covers those branches of the economy that provide the infrastructures and services of everyday life. These include the universal basic goods and services that every citizen needs\, such as food\, housing\, utilities. As such\, productive and related sectors such as food\, logistics\, construction\, health care and various other sectors deserve a renewed attention from scholars and policy makers alike. \nUrban Manufacturing\nManufacturing – the transformation at scale of physical goods through labour or technology – has traditionally concentrated around cities.  Only recently\, as many European cities find themselves with a dwindeling manufacturing sector\, are questions being asked about what kinds of manufacturing needs cities and what city needs are answered by manufacturing. \nRead more about the events\, register and find the agenda here.

SUMMARY:International Transdisciplinarity Conference 2019
DESCRIPTION:The aim of this conference\, Joining Forces for Change\, is to bring together actors from different professional mandates\, disciplines and sectors to engage and discuss practical examples and case studies that approach societal transformation through boundary breaking collaboration. The conference invites practitioners and researchers from government and administrative organisations and agencies\, interest groups from community and business\, and researchers and students from across the university. The overall focus is on what we can learn from our collaborative experiences\, case studies and practices regarding wider societal transformation\, methodological innovations and theoretical development. We will specifically search for “sites for change” in terms of spaces\, practices and learnings where TD research and co-production play a crucial role. \nLearn more about the conference and register here.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Built Environment Conference - Transition Towards a Net Zero Carbon Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:The SBE19 Graz conference is part of a major international series of conferences that focuses on sustainable buildings and construction. The series was launched by the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) and the International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment (iiSBE) more than ten years ago\, and these partners were subsequently joined by the Sustainable Building and Climate Initiative (SBCI) of UN Environment\, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GABC). \nThe series\, now on a three-year cycle\, has become recognized as the world’s preeminent conference series in this important field. The series consists of a first year of planning\, followed by a series of regional conferences in the second year\, and culminating in a global event during the third year. In 2019\, SBE19 Graz will be one of the regional conferences\, while the global conference World Sustainable Built Envoronment Conference (WSBE2020) will be held in Gothenburg\, Sweden in 2020. \nThe thematic umbrella of the WSBE2020 will be the United Nations SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (UN SDGs). SBE19 Graz will be organized in thematic line with this conference. In addition\, a focus should be put on approaches for implementation of sustainable developments. Graz University of Technology is going to host this conference in co-operation with University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences\, Vienna and for the first time internationally with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and ETH Zürich. \nRead more about the conference and agenda

SUMMARY:Webinar Urban Lunch Talk #6: From Project Partners to Synergy Soulmates
DESCRIPTION:EDIT: The recording is available on our Youtube channel! \nWhat if integrated approaches and cross-fertilization of issues were made key in urban transformation? How can public authorities and research actors together break out of silos-thinking\, and maximize the outcome for the innovation ecosystem that they are part of? What added values are shaped when projects and their partners work synergy effects? For whom\, how? The recording is available on our Youtube channel! \n\nWelcome to a webinar about using integrated approaches as a key in urban transformation. We will discuss how for example city authorities can partner in ways that has long term and cross-cutting impact on the state of the city. We look into how integrating a wide range of projects and issues can create valuable synergy effects\, both between projects and between projects and their surrounding environments and stakeholders. \nUrban transitions and sustainable urban development involve many different (sub)targets\, which tend to result in strategies or actions pursued in parallel or disconnected from each other. While some targets support each other\, others conflict across administrative departments\, sectors\, or societal groups. The global achievements of the UN Agenda 2030 SDGs\, and the implementation of the Paris Agreement raise several questions on ways of organizing and operating in order to reach targets on time. Both agendas serve a strong urban dimension and assert that ideally\, urban synergetics should underpin liveable and just cities. \nMeet…\n\nJoe Ravetz is Co-Director of the Collaboratory for Urban Resilience & Energy at the Manchester Urban Institute\, University of Manchester.  He has pioneered the art of strategic thinking for sustainable cities and regions\, which brings together environment-climate policy\, urban planning and design\, new economics and governance\, innovation and futures studies\, systems thinking and complexity science. With a background as an architect\, planner and development manager\, he is also a creative graphic facilitator and foresight trainer. Joe works with the LOOPER Living Labs which serve as new models for experimental design and innovation at the urban and community level. They can address practical problems such as air quality\, road safety\, noise\, crime or greenspace and are based on the involvement of stakeholders\, continuous monitoring of changes and direct consideration of their impact on the implementation process. There are Living Labs in Brussels\, Manchester and Verona. The project is part of the JPI Urban Europe ENSUF call. Joe covers material featured in these slides in his talk:\n– Joe’s talk props\nJoke Quintens (@jokequintens) is a “transitioneur”\, former deputy Mayor in the city of Genk\, passionate co-creater\, matchmaker and facilitator. Joke lives and works in Marseille (France) and in Living Lab Moving Marseille\, she uses the city as a laboratory to learn\, but also to connect people and projects inside and outside Marseille. She shares stories about sustainable transitions and the challenges of participation and co-creation in workshops\, writings\, interviews\, talks and other exchanges. She practices “Making City Together” as an expert in participatory policies and as a Wetopia ambassador\, with a first Wetopia Academy to be set up in Cape Town in October:\n“Dreams of a Wetopian Society”\nOpen Desgin Afrika: Wetopia\nTwenty Thirty\nAdrian Hill is a researcher\, designer and planner. He is interested in participatory oriented projects that are built around governance\, strategic communication and local economies. Adrian has worked across a range of issues including urban sustainability\, mobility\, agriculture\, eco-systems management\, renewable energy networks\, industry and material cycles. Most recently he has been focusing on urban manufacturing and industrial symbiosis. Adrian is based in Brussels and is the cofounder of the OSMOS Network\, a collaborator with LATITUDE platform and the coordinator of the JPI Urban Europe financed project Cities of Making through the ENSUF call. She is an URBACT Programme Expert\, an expert to the UIA Antwerp Circular South project and an UrbanA Fellow. Marcelline researches and experiments on the interaction between city administrations and citizens’ initiatives in Brussels (VILCO).
