The main challenge in ‘Sustainable Built Environment’ is to reduce energy use\, environmental impact\, and carbon footprint\, entail competitive industries for jobs and growth and at the same time ensure societal and social development and the well-being of citizens. The meeting will focus on the construction value chain responding to the climate and environmental challenges: district heating and cooling by Aksana Krasatsenka (Euroheat and Power) and deep retrofitting by Sergio Olivero (Politecnico di Torino)\, but also exciting new developments in the Brussels Tivoli district. Daniele Vettorato (EURAC) presents an analysis of tools and methods for developing Positive Energy Districts by COST Action 19126 and IEA Annex 83. \nRegister here to be part of the meeting. Here you can find the agenda. \nAction Cluster meeting Integrated Planning\, Policy and Regulations – Together\, let’s SHAPE 2022 and EXPLORE opportunities!\n09 November 2021 I 09:30 to 12:30 CET \nThe Action Cluster Integrated Planning\, Policies and Regulation will give you an update on past activities and the current status of its initiatives. These initiatives are: ‘From Planning and Implementation to Replication’ with Initiative Leads Judith Borsboom\, Christoph Gollner & Margit Noll\, ‘Regulatory Frameworks’ with Initiative Leads Klaus Livik\, Marit Myrstad\, & Annemie Wykcmans as well as ‘Tools and standards for smart cities’ with Initiative Lead Bernard Gindroz. In addition\, the Cluster headed by Simona Costa will have an interactive discussion on how the future looks for the AC and its initiatives taking into account new technological\, societal and political developments as the use of digital twins for integrated planning\, and New European Bauhaus. Discussion will evolve on how these link to the Action Cluster activities and what new opportunities can be opened for the Initiatives. \nRegister here to be part of the meeting and find the preliminary agenda here. \nAction Cluster meeting Business Models & Finance\nDate: 10 November 2021 I 09:30 to 12:00 CET \nThis Action Cluster aspires to be a platform of choice for stakeholder-dialogue\, and to identify and remove the obstacles for the accelerated development of the smart cities market. Its objectives are to accelerate the development of smart city markets through knowledge sharing\, innovation and expertise on business models\, finance and funding and procurement. During this meeting\, you will be updated on plans and recent activities of the Action Cluster Sustainable Built Environment in general. In particular on the initiative on financing platforms  by Juergen Ritzek (EE-IP)\, pre-commercial procurement by Georg Vogt (Empirica)\, and the potential for an ESCO modelling tool in smart city contexts by Derrick Pisani (Connectivity). Additionally\, feedback will be gathered to guide further work of the initiatives and to support cross-Action Cluster collaboration. Please find enclosed a more detailed agenda for the event. \nRegister here to be part of the meeting and find the preliminary agenda here. \nAction Cluster meeting Citizen Focus\n15 November 2021 I 15:00 to 17:00 CET \nIn a time of urban transformation and digitalisation of smart cities to respond to climate change and demographic challenges\, a risk is that too little attention is given to citizens. Chaired by Maria Sangiuliano (SmartVenice)\, the Citizen Focus Action Cluster strongly believes in citizens as fundamental actors for the regeneration and development of intelligent communities. In the context of smarter cities\, citizens can help local governments prioritise and respond by consistently offering inclusive ‘smart’ solutions attentive to contrast inequalities and existing divides. Join us to hear more about policy updates from the European Commission\, a new Democratic Innovations Initiative\, the initiative Citizen’s Control of Personal Data\, and  a new sustainable foundation with 19 associated cities planning to fund a digital platform with an embedded Central Purchasing Body to support joint procurement processes. \nRegister here to be part of the meeting. And here you can find the preliminary agenda of the meeting here. \nAction Cluster meeting Integrated Infrastructures and Processes\n18 November 2021 I 09:30 to 12:30 CET \nSharing data across city services and stakeholders\, and multi-purposing city assets\, to achieve desired outcomes\, is highly contemporary\, absolutely essential\, and frustratingly challenging. \nMany city infrastructures are ageing; budgets to replace them are stretched; they are procured and managed in ‘silos’. Yet the potential for cities and their customers through new joined-up approaches to exploit modern technologies is substantial. \nRegister here to be part of the meeting.

SUMMARY:STRENGTHENING URBAN POLICY IN THE EU: Integrating the Principles of the New Leipzig Charter into the Urban Agenda for the EU
DESCRIPTION:The New Leipzig Charter is the key reference document on principles of good urban governance in Europe. It is interlinked with the Urban Agenda for the EU as a novel multi-level governance approach that aims to strengthen the “urban dimension” of EU policies. With the first generation of partnerships of the Urban Agenda for the EU coming to an end\, the process of paving the way for an even stronger Urban Agenda has been initiated and advanced under the Trio Presidency of Germany\, Portugal and Slovenia. This process will conclude with the adoption of the Ljubljana Agreement at the Informal Ministerial on Urban Development on 26 November 2021. \nHow can the continuation of the Urban Agenda for the EU contribute to the implementation of the principles of the New Leipzig Charter\, and vice versa? How can we bring an urban dimension into EU-policies\, such as the “Green Deal”? \nThe event is aimed at the stakeholders of the European “urban development community” with a strong interest in the EU “urban dimension”. The session will conclude the comprehensive series of seven public web conferences “Cities Fit for Future” on the implementation of the New Leipzig Charter\, which started in September 2020. It is organised by the German Association for Housing\, Urban and Spatial Development and funded by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior\, Building and Community in the context of the National Urban Development Policy. \n18.
