In the editorial, the honorary professor at Vienna University of Technology, brings up the example of how the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has become a global player in research, much thanks to international dialogue and collaboration with foreign funding agencies. Following the trend from bilateral to multilateral initiatives between China and Europe, Horvat illustrates how the NSFC and JPI Urban Europe’s joint pilot call Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas, involving nine European funding agencies, can serve as a reference and for future multilateral initiatives between the two actors.
