Strategic synthesis tools for transdisciplinary research and innovation

Urban transitions towards sustainable and liveable futures increasingly rely on experimental approaches, where everyday experiences mingle with technical expertise. A synthetic mindset has probably never been more needed than now.

The contemporary challenge is many times not only about synthesising evidence from academic research. More and more the urban development working environments, with cross-sectoral expertise, policy areas, and societal groups, require active translation to an integrated language shareable by affected parties, stakeholders, public representatives, etc.
By Strategic Synthesis, JPI Urban Europe responds to these needs by developing ways, approaches, methods, and mindsets to support co-creative work in urban transitions. This is crucial not only in a local level practitioner context. Knowledge integration and e.g. developed evidence-synthesis are crucial to the European Research Area’s objectives to transform research and innovation (R&I) results to use in current societal transformations towards sustainable development and promote a culture of knowledge valorisation (cf. Towards a policy dialogue and exchange of best practices on knowledge valorisation).
The report ‘Strategic synthesis – green paper towards a framework for fostering research and innovation knowledge integration in joint programming?’ presents suggestions and first steps towards a framework on strategic synthesis for transnational programming that benefits local level action as well as policy making in the EU urban dimension, not to mention tackling the UN Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
