The Pilot Series 2018/2019
The very successful pilot series of our Urban Lunch Talks aired as a countdown to the launch of our refurbished Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA 2.0) in the winter of 2018/2019. Participants from more than twenty different countries actively engaged in the talk together with distinguished invited speakers. The content was built from the SRIA 2.0 introducing a dilemma-driven approach to urban development and innovation. Four urban dilemmas have been made priority in the SRIA 2.0 and formed the point of departure for each webinar in the pilot series, explained briefly in the clip below:

Public space holds a central role in European cities, it needs to fill a variety of functions and accommodate all groups of people. In the very first Urban Lunch Talk our panelists discuss the development and management of inclusive public spaces. How do we navigate a debate with so many stakeholders?
The webinar is hosted by Cissi Askwall, CEO of the Swedish NGO Public & Science, and the panel consists of:
- Yvonne Franz, Mag. Dr. in Urban Geography at the University of Vienna.Her research interests lie in the fields of urban geography with a special focus on neighbourhood development, urban revitalisation and gentrification as well as urban planning and governance.
- Katarina Kristiánová, PhD at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
- Alenka Korenjak, Architect and cofounder of ProstoRož.
How can we digitalize our cities in the most efficient way? The panel discusses how urban governance can benefit from a digital transition and the void created when technology backfires. View the episode here.
This time we’re joined by:
- Béla Kézy, Thematic expert at URBACT, founder of MEGAKOM Development Consultancy,focusing on regional and urban development and supporting European programmes and projects. During his career he has been working with various underdeveloped regions and settlements to devise strategies and projects to tackle serious labour market problems.
- Marina Neagu, Co-founder at the consultancy MKBT: Make Better anda development professional with work experience in Romania and Eastern Europe. Her academic background is in urban economy, local economic development and spatial planning.
- Patrick Arthur Driscoll, Project Manager at the Department of Architecture and Planning at NTNU. Hisresearch interests lie in the field of decision making and climate change planning, focusing on planners’ understanding of the relationship between mitigation and adaptation.
How do you prepare for the unexpected without sacrificing livability? For the third episode the panelists discuss how to transition into more liveable and sustainable cities in the context of current and future crises. Click here to view episode 3.
Our three expert panelists are:
- Vanesa Castán Broto, professorial fellow at the Urban Institute at the University of Sheffield.Her research has been funded by the British Academy, Leverhulme Trust, ESRC, EPSRC and the Institution of Civil Engineers. She has been awarded for her work against climate change with a focus on the urban poor.
- Andrew Karvonen, Associate Professor and Director of Doctoral Studies in the Division of Urban and Regional Studies at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Karvonen has conducted research on the politics and practice of sustainable urban development with a particular focus on the cultural and social dimensions of urban technologies.
- Vlad Mykhnenko, Associate Professor of Sustainable Urban Development and a Fellow of St. Peter’s College at the University of Oxford. Currently researching urban regional economies, sustainable development, and region growth.
How can cities answer the demand for densification and infrastructure provision under the constraints of scarce resources, financial limitations, accessibility and affordability for all? Three expert panelists discuss sustainable land-use and urban infrastructure in the fourth installment of Urban Lunch Talk, and the panelists are:
- Sara Borgström, Assistant Professor in Sustainable Urban Development, KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Research interest lies in urban sustainability,strategies and methods for trans-disciplinary processes in urban settings, and urban green-blue infrastructure in densifying cities.
- Marc Dijk, Research Fellow at International Centre for Integrated Assessment and Sustainable Development (ICIS), Maastricht University. As well as a Honorable Research Associate Oxford University. His reasearch focuses on innovation and sustainability assessment.
- Igor Kos, Advisor at WCYCLE Institute Maribor.
