Midterm event for the Innovation Action projects provided the opportunity for knowledge sharing and new insights

It was a dialogue rich and interesting day for the researchers and partners from the four projects funded under the Innovations for Managing Sustainable Urban Accessibility Call, as they met online for their midterm event in October. The event gathered over 30 participants and offered the projects an opportunity to meet each other for knowledge sharing, strategic discussions and exchanges on impact, and learning from their research and experiences so far.

The projects tackle different aspects of sustainable urban mobility and follow different approaches like participatory experiments for street design transformation, improving traffic management tools and road pricing schemes.

Nevertheless, it became clear that all projects have a vision in common; in the end, the research results should lead to realisable concepts that make our cities more attractive and liveable,

says Christine Zehetgruber, programme manager at FFG, the Austrian Research Promotion Agency, which is one of the national funding agencies in this Call.

The midterm event enabled a great exchange between the projects on individual approaches and previous experiences in activating stakeholders. It also revealed findings that could be taken into account when preparing new projects. For instance, a common perception among the projects was that the collaboration/cooperation with municipalities, city authorities and locals are very important.

The projects have highlighted that finding an engaged local person – either from public authorities or civil society – is key for the project implementation. While there are a few tough organizational difficulties to overcome, they bring in essential local contacts, context and knowledge,

says Maximilian Jäger, AustriaTech, and 15-minute City coordinator in the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership, who attended the event and gave a thematic introduction to the Innovation Action focus of this Call.

During the afternoon, the participants were able to take part in a workshop organized by the Knowledge Hub ACUTE. The ACUTE project (Accessibility and Connectivity knowledge hub for Urban Transformation in Europe) e.g. enable cross-project cooperation, and extract and consolidate knowledge of the ENUAC projects.

The participants discussed the impact that they could potentially achieve with their project results. It also became clear that the projects could utilise even more synergies among themselves in order to enhance their impact,

says Christine Zehetgruber, programme manager at FFG, the Austrian Research Promotion Agency.

A contribution on science communication and an outlook on the next formal milestones rounded off the midterm event.

Let’s continue to foster these connections and collaborations and work together for sustainable urban transition! Up next is the final event in 2025.
